i've had my shine for 3 months or so, and i've been thinking about getting the iphone. does anyone know what would have to be done? or would i get penalized because i'm basically upgrading super early.

I know when I switched from my iphone 2g to the sony w580i i had a certain amount of time to return the phone and they would take back the ugrade fee. I ended up not returning and just selling it. But anyways, I got a 3g because I broke the 2g and well they messed up my upgrade so I lucked out and got to get the 3g for 300$ (16g).

If you don't qualify for the upgrade you have to pay full price.

what's full price of say an 8gb and would there be a change in the plan? because right now i'm on my girlfriends family share and i have a feeling something would have to change if i were to get the iphone

I couldn't actually tell you the real price of the phone but I think it's around the same price as the old iphones.
But I do know that with a 3g plan the data is 30 a month.
Thats all you have to have.
You can keep your minute plan the way it is.

Yeah, it sounds like you're in too long to return it or do an upgrade without making it very complicated. If you really want to switch phones at this point the easiest way would be to pay full price for the iphone and sell your shine on ebay to recoup some of your costs. If it's in really good condition it looks like you might be able to get around $100 to $120 for it.

I just switched to the 3G iPhone about a month ago. I was on the verizon network prior. I had the Treo 700w with Verizon and I had purchased it off eBay and just activiated it myself online. When I went to switch to AT&T, I did not have to pay a cancellation fee because I didn't purchase my phone through them, so I wasn't on their own "upgrade schedule." tiffson is correct, the data plan on the 3G is 30 a month. I also have 1500 txt's for 15/mo and the minimum amount of minutes, which is 450 and that's around 50 or so. All-together my monthly bill is around 100 after tax, etc. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
