Definitely go with the gold. It's more springy. Mahogany is more of a fall color.

Is this something you picked out yourself or is this the type she wanted. idk that i like the monogram and i'm not really into the signature stripe collection but thats just me. I agree with Shannon that the white is more Spring and the brown is more Fall but I think if i HAD to choose one of these I'd pick the mahogany because i'd wear a brown purse more than gold, but again thats just me.

Aside from the tastes, it also depends on her complexion. I'm mozzarella white so brown looks good on me, darker complexions (like my twin) gold suites her better.

The gold is trendy. The mahogany is more of a classic Coach color...both are nice, but I would think she will get more use out of the mahogany. Gold would be more for "going out/evening functions".
