Default My Sunroof Shattered--Apparently By Itself!

Came home today and found the sunroof shattered all around the edges. The air deflector was up, bits of glass everywhere. Highly unlikely it was vandalism. No sign of anything that could have exerted that much force!
Anyone else had a problem? I see that the 06 models had issues...What is my next step?

well the issue you're referring to is actually for the glass deflector itself... not the full roof glass piece. Need more details... like was it parked on the street, etc. Could've been something as simple as a passing truck or something that kicked up for example a small rock. With a glass pane, all it takes is the right amount of pressure, force in the right place to stress the glass to break much easier then you would ever think it would.

Well, thanks (no thanks) for the sympathy...! This is not funny. There is no way something hit that sunroof. It was out in the open and in our drive in a rural area.
Be serious! Think maybe a giant hawk saw his reflection and tried to defend his territory? He would be dead if he hit a roof hard enough to shatter that glass--some of it was on the ground a foot from the car!

Anyway, I called the dealer and they sent someone to tow it back to the dealership.
After that--still have to find out what's what after work today. The dealership said they'd never heard of any problems like this before--Google will change that in a hurry!

wasn't there something about the pressure inside the car building up and breaking our glass roofs?

There are way too many vent holes in the floorboard to allow that to happen.

I think I remember someone saying that it had gotten really hot and it just shattered and they were near it when it happened, so it wasn't vandalism or anything like that.

That did happen to someone in Texas iirc. It was over a hundred degrees outside though. The thread is on scionlife somewhere...dates 3 or 4 years back maybee.

*edit

Couldn't find the case I was talking about, but here's one with some usefull info.

Default Just Reading

I can tell you it does happen for no reason and it can happen in the colder weather, but not when it is freezing cold. My wind deflector shattered on night and the temp was not below 25 degrees. At first I did not know what it was but the next morning when I went to clear snow off the roof, I noticed the whole deflector was shattered.

No stone, (as the deflector was fully down when it happened) This was the 3rd winter this car has seen and not a single problem before then. The dealer says they have not heard of such a thing happening but they had the glass deflector in stock so either lots of people roll their tC or they know there is an issue and they keep stock on hand for quick replacement.

Still an Ongoing Problem:

Shattering Sunroofs Might be More Common than you Think

The glass in my SUNROOF blew off today while I was driving 60mph down the freeway!!!
