i did some research in the past because i was thinking of getting one as well. apparently they like a playmate and do not do so well alone. chinchillas require lots of exercise and they should be kept in a large cage and have play time in the room, but they are chewers and may chew furniture or electric wires, so it's better to allow them to run around in a room with no wires or furniture (bathroom?) every day.

they cannot regulate their body temperature and may die from being too hot. ideal temperatures are between 45 and 70 degrees fahrenheit with low humidity. the cage should be kept out of direct sunlight as well as direct draft.

never let the chinchilla into water, because the fur can be ruined. use hanging water bottles with valves. instead of baths they use a dust to keep clean. they should be given access to dust bathes 3-4 times a week.

they should be provided with fresh hay cubes several times a week. cages are cleaned at least once a week. once a month a cage should be given a thorough scrub down.

provided with proper care Chinchillas can live up to 20 years. this is what made me decide against it. i got hamsters instead; a couple year commitment on the outside. if i'm gonna commit to 20 years, i'll get a dog instead....jmo
