To me, It is not about the name on the outside, it is what you get on the inside. I have an HP dv1000 and I have been completely happy with it. The only reason I bought it was because it had what I wanted for the price I was willing to pay.

I do PC repair for a living and I can tell you some thing to consider about each brand -
Sony - A bit pricy for what you can get. As others have said, you can get the same for less.

Dell - Hardware is as good as any, support can go wither way. I you have their extended srvices they love you, otherwise you may have to sit on hold forever. No brink and mortar store to bring it to.

HP/Compaq - with the right sale you may find a series that will fit your needs. average as far as durability.

Toshiba - specilize in notebooks. Their units come back less frequently compared to other brands and I see more older units around with no problems as compared to others. Qosmio line is really nice...

Gaming Brands - Nice units, you pay a lot for the stuff you normally can't get with regular companies.

Apple - If you want one then get one, if not oh well...

Don't get the MacMini, Vaio or Dell. Wait until they improve the MacBook (if they ever...) but if you want one now, the new ThinkPads are great!

I have a Toshiba and had it through 4 years of college. It still works great and I had to replace the fan last year. I'd say I got my money's worth.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1150 and THE DAY AFTER the warranty expired, the thing broke. Fixing it was a BIG pain in my a$s, but it's fixed and runs like crap. I curse the day I bought it.

Bottom line - buying a Dell is like buying a Kia.

I have a Dell notebook from the Inspiron 6000 to the upgraded version of that model which is the Inspiron E1505. Got no complaints here. I waited for a really good coupon to come out and I found a 35% off coupon when i purchased it. Guess I lucked out. I haven't had any technical issues or any kinda problem with my notebook. It gets the job done from playing World of Warcraft .. Watching movies .. Homework .. Etc .. My notebook has not crapped out on me. I had my 6000 for over a year and I did not have any problems with that either. But that notebook got stolen so I purchased this one. All I can say is that Dell has been good to me. Oh Btw .. The upgraded battery on my E1505 lasts me for over 3 1/2 hours. Maybe more ?? Haha .. thats something to think about. BUT !! To be completely honest it weighs alot. If you want something more easier to carry but with about the same amount of power I would suggest either the E1405 or the Inspiron 710m. The 710m is lightweight and starts off at 4.1 lbs with a 12 inch monitor.

Other friends have Toshiba's and those are great notebooks as well. I dont know much about them but my friends seem to love their notebook as well. They haven't had any problems either.

Hopefully this helped. Oh .. you can go to gotapex.com to check out the coupons for Dell Inspiron notebooks.

I thought I should bring up this thread from the dead and inform everyone that my Dell laptop has officially died two days ago. I'm in the process of buying a new one. I will never buy from Dell again. I had the laptop for 20 months. That's just ridiculous.
