So there are some pretty amazing digital cameras on the market these days. That's great if you keep your photo collection stored digitally, but if you need to print out pictures then you also need a good printer. I have a decent camera, but when I print out pictures they always look sh*tty and pixelated on close inspection. I guess that's because I just have a regular home/office printer. Can anyone recommend a good printer for printing out hi-res digital photos?

 

Just about any somewhat newer printer should work just fine. It's probably the setting you have your camera on. I know if i'm just going to upload the pics on the internet then it doesn't have to be superfine but if you plan on printing them then you need to put it on the superfine setting. Just remember that by doing so your camera isn't going to be able to store as many pics since the quality is higher.

 

Hmmm, so I don't need a photo printer? I always take my pictures on the highest available resolution, although I'm not sure about the superfine setting. I'll have to double-check that.

 

Some printers are going to do a much better job at printing photos than other printers might. It doesn't necessarily have to be a dedicated "photo printer" to give good results. Keep in mind that even the best photo printers still need good quality photo paper to yield nice prints. I have an Epson RX595 that (when I use Epson premium photo paper) gives me prints that look BETTER than the ones I get from on-line photo labs. The RX595 is an "all-in-one" scanner, copier, and printer.

 

i print on premium glossy photo paper, and make sure my printer settings accommodate the paper (i.e color options)

Well I have a Dell all-in-one printer/scanner/copier here at home. I do use glossy photo paper, but I always find that fine details get lost. The pictures I print look good from a couple of feet away, but they look poor when you get up close and inspect the details. Maybe it's the camera settings and the way I'm saving the files.

 

what is usualy your pictures dpi?

 

rodc - maybe the problem is the source of the image. how many megapixels is your camera? the higher the better and the higher it is, the denser your DPI (dots per inch). typically the DPI for a print should be close to 300DPI if not higher.

if your camera pics look great on the computer and you're expecting the same results on paper, you'll have to consider that on the computer, the highest dpi that's legible is really only 72 dpi. that being the case, WYSINWYG if you're printing out 2 or 3 MP pictures.

cameras right now are pretty affordable, you should be able to get a nice 6-8mp camera for less than $200 and prices are falling fast. It's pretty funny, there's no way I would have been able to write that last sentence 3-4 years ago.
