Default Put pro athletes on a dyno....

SO, at the NFL combine the prospects lift weight, run the 40 yard dash, and various other tests of physical aptitude...Has anyone ever thought of measuring their horsepower output?? You know, put em on a dyno and let em spin it up! It would predict a combination of their body muscle and speed. Probably be a good way to test running backs ability to break tackles and such. Just like with cars, it would be all about the power/weight ratio. Since Lineman are strong, they'd probably put up decent numbers, but they're heavy so they wouldn't be very fast...U could go on forever...

What does everyone think? REAL off topic huh

There is actually a way to roughly calculate human horsepower. A science teacher did it with us in class once back when I was in high school. As I remember it, it involved each of us charging up and down a flight of stairs and a stopwatch and calcuations with our bodyweight. Can't tell you more than that..

For what its worth, the average healthy adult human can produce about 0.1 horsepower (75 watts) sustained and about 0.3 horsepower for short periods.

....but if you breathe through a CAI, hold some Irridium spark plugs in your hand and slap some stickers on your ___ you go up to 0.5 horsepower.

It's funny you bring up this topic... Back in High School Physic, we did an experiment to measure own horsepower. i measured to produce 1.3bhp (body horsepower).

I agree with you... Don't get me wrong, i am greatful for the past couple of years, that last game was just painful to watch. Kinda reminded me of my 4 years of high school football, each season we went 2 - 8! Also painful...

But I digress, I too remember the "human horsepower" measurement we did in HS Senior Physics. Also, the Museum of Science in Boston had a "Speed" exhbit which included a stationary bcycle which measured human hp output.

Lance Armstrong is allegedly able to sustain about 500 Watts output for an hour. Thats about 2/3 hp. For a person in reasonable shape, putting out 1 hp for a short period of time is no challenge at all.
