Radar/ Laser Detectors
I am not sure where to post this thread, since this is a general off-topic cafe I figured this was the place.
I was interested in opinions on Radar/ Laser Detectors.
I am not totally sure it is something I really need. I drive in DC, Northern VA, through Maryland, DE and Northern New Jersey. Of course it should not matter what car I am driving, but it is a Scion TC.
Here are some of the units I am looking at, and if you have an opinion on these units or radar detectors in general I would welcome them.
Escort Passport Max2
Escort Passport 8500 X50
Whistler Cr90
Thanks in advance.

FYI, Virginia and Washington DC banned radar detectors. Hope you don't get pull over there.
I don't trust my beltronics rx65 anymore.
On the Garden State Parkway, the State Trooper usually hides behind the trees. the rx65 didn't go off until i was almost right next to him. He clocked me at 83. And he saw my detector. He give me a ticket for going 69mph so i don't get too many points.

Thanks for your response. I checked the laws for those states, and was surprised New Jersey did not ban radar detectors.
VA would play an active role in pulling speeding cars over, DC I think does most of it by remote camera locations, But, I had planned on bagging the detector until I was out of VA & DC. I guess I was more worried about the Southern part of NJ, DE & MD. It is kind of strange about VA though, their gun laws are so open yet they do not like radar detectors.

The Max2 is clearly the most superior out of the 3 but its also the most expensive. The escort live option is a pretty solid thing to have and its the nicest one to use in my opinion. If budget isn't an issue go with it. Also the best thing to do if you are driving through a state where a radar is illegal then carry a self addressed stamped padded envelope with you with sufficient postage affixed for the weight of the detector. If you get pulled over rip the sucker off your windsheild and throw it in the envelope and seal it on the spot. At that point in time the officer CANNOT open the mail without a warrant, worst he can do is force you to drop it in a mail box and even then Im not sure if he could do that.

I was pulled over twice in VA, got a speeding ticket one of those times, the other time the cop let me go. Both times, both of the cops did seem to have an attitude. Of course, just having met two of Virginia's finest I could not make an accurate judgement on them. Perhaps, it is just the way they were trained to speak to people, I do not know.

Keep in mind too that if you were using the detector in those states and you get pulled over and get the detector in the envelope and they THINK you have a detector but can't find it or find the envelope and know whats inside but they can't prove it you ARE getting that speeding ticket lol as well as maybe others if you have anything else done to your car thats illegal (front window tint for example) but at least you're not out the 700 dollar detector

It was Rated #1 in among The Top 10: The Best Radar Detectors of 2016 | Top Ten Reviews
I'm in Cali. We have the most Registered vehicles, therefore the most cops. And cops are thick as flies out here.
In the Real World, I recently drove down to L.A. in my high profile tC and it Alerted me like crazy but, no cops around.
Finally 2 miles down the road I came across the CHP giving some unlucky motorist a ticket!
R/Ds are not bullet-proof. They can have their Radar turn off until they spot you. They are sneaky. So it is a cat and mouse game.
So far in 1 year, I have driven 10,000 miles in a high profile car w/o a ticket.
Radar Detectors are legal in all States but, VA and D.C. They are also illegal for Commercial Truck Drivers.
I Suggest you check into the: Escort REDLiNE, the Bel STiR Plus and the Passport 9500ci. These are Stealth Radar Detectors.
IOW, they are invisible to police radar. They are what some truck drivers and peeps that frequent the VA and D.C. area are using.
