Default salesmen for dealerships read: question

I have an interview thursday with a dealership staffing company after applying to toyota..

just curious, for the sales position, how much can i expect to make an hour and how does commission work?

Ive heard some people say working at a dealership pays well, ive heard others say it doesnt.

if you are lucky, you will get a small salary and a % of the gross profit from sales, you dont get paid by the hour (too bad cus its a lot of hours).

if you are unlucky you get a draw whcih you end up having to pay the dealer back. make that your first question. dealerships love when you say you are there to make money because if you make money they make more haha. ask them about pay right off the bat, say do you have a salary or a draw. if they have a draw ask yourself this question, can i sell or not? because you HAVE to sell cars to make money with a draw. other wise the dealer lets you borrow money

Interesting. So, salaries i would expect around what a year? Maybe $20-$25k?

With the draw's, you aren't paid anything "securely" and your only paid based cars you sell and the % they give you based on how much the car sold for?

hm, $300 a week (if after taxes) isnt too bad, $1,200 a month without anything else added.

Hopefully that will be the outcome rather than the draw!

Thanks for the information!

Well i would assume that someone could at very least sell 3-4 cars a month depending on where the dealership is located.

hah you would htink that, toyota i heard is easier then subaru, but its still a tough business, you have to prove yourself. dont let anyone push you around cus you're the "rookie"
i had one woman that worked there try to make me do all the dunken donut runs and bs like that. untill 1 day i decided i wasnt goin, but she proceded to take a coffee run and then she put everyones money on my desk with the post-it of what everyone ordered, then i looked at her and said, you dont owe me 10 bucks but hey moneys money ill tkae it, and i crumpled the list up and put the money in my pocket, she was ____ed at me for a month, but she got over it. they try to walk over the new guys all day long, stand your ground and be NICE to your customers (thats how i won mine over) have conversations with them, TELL THEM YOU ARE NEW!! thats an ice breaker for them. they LOVE new guys they think that because you are new you will do ANYTHING to sell them a car. and best of all it gives you control over the sale. tell them you are new and you want them to get the best deal so they buy the car so you can show your boss you are good enough to keep. then when your sales manager gives you numbers make it sound like its the best numbers you have EVER seen. get into it most of all. MAKE EVERY SALE FUN. they will come back and send their friends. and tehy will call you just to say hi (or at least a bunch of m customers did)

i actually miss that job.

i wouldnt expect much more than 200-250 a week before taxes. As far as commission goes, each dealer has their own program. I get a percentage of front end gross, back end gross and also accessories/items sold. As far as the whole 3 to 4 cars sold a month thing, you wont last if those are the numbers you are putting out. There is a great potential to make incredible money in this business...it has been tough the past couple years in comparison to the past. I have been with Scion for 4 years and my second and third year were the best...this year was a tough year with the economy being in a hole. The dealer is gonna expect you to put out at least 10 cars a month depending on how much volume they do as a whole dealer...lets put it this way, they expect me to sell 10 scions a month. My dealership is a standalone dealer, its not a Toyota and Scion dealership. We have seperate buildings so its tough as we dont see as much foot traffic as the other dealers that are toyota and scion in the same building so our closing ratio is through the roof with the team we have working. Another thing you need to ask them is what is there bonus program like. Our bonus program is when you hit 10-12 cars you get $800 volume bonus, $20 per car retro bonus and the numbers go up as you sell more...like 13-15 cars is $1000 and $25 retro etc. One more thing, see if they offer a demo car or demo allowance. Good luck bro!

yea teh dealer i worked at was MAD slow, i averaged 8 cars a month, but i HELD gross on them. i didnt give cars away but i made it sound like i did

anyways its tough sometimes, if you dont sell a car in a couple days dont let it get you down. also try to close every customer you talk to (i know it wont happen, but it betters your odds)

actually, we just bought out the huge plumbing supply store that was across the street from us and they are gonna turn that into a state of the art mega center service department and there gonna blow out the toyota showroom and update that. Were gonna the Scion building, Toyota Cars/SUV's building, Toyota Truck Center(Tundras, Tacomas and FJ's) and then the mega service center...there gonna definitely be hiring but it wont really be complete for a couple of years. We are actually hiring a sales person at scion right now so if anyone is in the area of Long Island NY and is looking for a sales position feel free to stop down and fill out an application.

I worked for a Honda dealership when I was 20 while still in school. I made $34k that year which was decent I guess. My friend worked at the Infiniti dealership right next to us (same dealership line) and made over $80k the same year. But it's not for everyone. I couldn't stand the hours, the pay sucked, but at least I liked dealing with the customers. For the most part they are very friendly and appreciative.
