very sad. I'll rather get a girl pregnant than kill myself. That's dumb.
Hope it does prove big bang theory though. Then the pregnancy will prove another big bang in history. haha

That's not the same thing at all. These were all things we could manipulate relatively safely. This is a black hole and they're working off of theories and calculations for something we've only seen through super high powered telescopes. This is something potentially more powerful than anything in the entire universe. Keep in mind they intend to start with a small black hole and make it bigger.

I take as little medications and lotions and such as I can because I think they've caused more harm than good and let my own common sense judge whether a food is good for me or not. I pay attention to my own body and what it likes and doesn't like and don't worry about eating super healthy. You're going to die when it's your time and you could end up with cancer whether you eat healthy or not.

It is the same thing. Science is science, no matter how you look at it. Some of it is still all theories, some of it has been proven to be factual.

You refuse to believe any sciences which have been proven to be fact, yet you believe in some mysterious, impossible to prove, ultimate being? I do believe in other life in the universe. Hell, I think you have to be pretty ____ing dense to think Earth is the only habitable place in the entire universe. What I don't believe in, is one super-being who started everything, because the way I see it, where the hell did this super-being come from? The God theory is just like the chicken and the egg. Did this God create human life, or did human life create this god? No one knows. Right now, it can't be proved and it can't be disproved. This is why FSM was such a huge revelation. But with the LHC, we could potentially come even closer to understanding the true origins of the Universe.

I agree with several of you in both cases, only if we're certain this project comes through 100% successfull and it has a possitive outcome for science then I'd be okay with it, but really the billions of dollar put into this could have gone into more important research such as cancer research or alternative fuels to fix our damaged environment. We arent even sure what will come of the test in October, why would they risk everything that we've evolved and learned throughout the decades to study and test something thats out of our hands in the first place?

Successful sinerio: That was wicked yoo, we recreated the big bang!! (pat on back..go home)... i mean really, big deal

Not so successful: "Oops!" then..... we're nothing, like we never existed.

Heres the petition against the test...again: http://www.petitiononline.com/stopLHC/petition.html

ohh nothing...just the possible imminent end of all life as we know it, or not. But basically just a lot of money wasted instead of spending it all on something more practical.

I'm a big science person, but honestly. I agree. money could be better spent. such as. TURBOS FOR EVERYONE ON SL!

edit: LOL i just realized if you type in S L together it comes up SL.

On the religious side, supposedly there was no beginning, depending on the religion, a higher power has always existed which obviously doesn't make sense because humans were not intended to comprehend the 'higher-power's' plan. Not understanding all the big facts about life is part of a religion. The after-life is where all of this is conceived.
Religion isn't based much on logical/rational reasoning because it deals simply with faith and beliefs.

However, on the science side, this is extremely interesting and I am excited to see the results of the experiment. If we can harness the energy safely, more breakthroughs should be seen in the future for surrrre...

That is what some people are scared of. They think a bunch of micro black holes will appear and grow in size and consume the earth. Crazy? yes. Stupid? yes.
That isn't the only thing. If this works, it could potentially disprove all religions and theories of god.
...which would create some serious hysteria.
Yep, it will either destroy the planet, or will cause the crazy people to destroy the planet.

my fave video about the the collider.

on a serious note, smaller forms of the collider are already in place and working around the world. These colliders have aided in science. What about the start of the nuclear age, when we first booted one up, i bet we knew we would be 100% safe!!! Also the people saying that we are doing it to create black holes, is solely mistaken. It is a by-product of the collision. The size of these black holes will be no larger than the holes already in existence that scientists have stated are all around us anyway. These are created and collapse just as quickly.

No matter what people say, recreating the big bang theory is a huge deal. This could disprove religion, there is a reason why many religious heads want it out of science and want creationism instead.

Go through the history of science, where would we be today if it wasnt for people pushing the limits? How many times did it take Edison to create the light bulb? More than 1000 times, and at that time in history, I am sure no one knew what the outcome could have potentially become. Same with car motors, when gravity was coined, go back to all of the greatest thinkers/scientists. They ALWAYS tested the boundaries of human abilities at their respective time.

"A SOURCE OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
High energy experiments like the LHC push back the limits in engineering and software design. New technologies have to be developed which then find use in other areas. Superconducting magnets designed for particle physics colliders are already used in medicine and chemistry. Novel detectors capable of handling the LHC's high radiation levels are being considered for mammography and other imaging systems. The know-how behind the LHC software, electronic hardware and data distribution infrastructure (which must cope with data rates equivalent to 10,000 copies of Encyclopaedia Britannica a second) is similarly expected to lead to a new era of information technology that will benefit industry, medicine and people's everyday lives."

Believing in the creation theory is no less logical than the Big Bang theory. What's stupid is someone mocking me about how we couldn't have been created by a "magical man in the sky" while they believe that a magical cosmic explosion just happened for no reason from elements that came from nowhere then after our planet was formed we magically evolved from a primordial ooze and through millions of years of random genetic misfires we ended up being an extremely complicated creature that we still don't fully understand.

I used logical in a wierd way, possibly scientific would of fit a bit better. But I never compared the two theories together in the first place, age old argument that is a waste of time imho.

Yeah it's not scientific but personally, I've found my own evidence that leads me to believe in intelligent design.

- I believe in spirits and an afterlife. I know way too many people that have seen or heard ghosts. One girl showed me a crazy cell phone video that shows her chihuahua barking down the hallway. You can see a kinda purplish shape (which showed in the video but wasn't seen in person by the girl) moving really slowly towards the girl and the barking chihuahua. Then the shape gets right in front of the barking dog and the dog makes a "Yip" and leaps backwards. It's a trippy video. Then I have another female friend that has 'visions' of things (she was in a house and got an impression in her mind and accurately described how the house layout used to be) and has heard the ghost of her husbands uncle whispering in her ear (her husband heard that as well). I just have too many friends that have ghost stories of their own.

- Then there is quantum physics which shows that a photon can be in 2 places at one time and their theories that time travel is possible and that there are alternate dimensions.

- I believe that in the expanse that is the universe there has to be another place where life exists.

Due to those things I believe it's possible that an entity unseen by people can be everywhere at once and know all things.

this is how its gonnna go down..........

Yeah, ok, so we didnt create the big bang! But our assistant scientist Joe had gonorrhea, and it seems to have disapeared......... so yeah we have a cure for gonorrhea now!

lol

i think the biproducts that come from this experiment will benefit us greatly, even if the purpose isnt intended on doing so

Assuming the scientists can pull it off without miscalculating or getting overconfident and biting off more than they can chew, you are probably right. My biggest problem with scientists is that they don't really know when to say when. I can see them growing this black hole to a size they can't control.
