Default At Toyota, lifetime employment; at GM, a new bureaucracy

Imagine getting paid up to $100,000 a year to not work.
And we thought legacy costs were to blame for Detroit's woes.

"Electronic technician Tom Adams is working toward a doctorate in history at Michigan State University and is writing a dissertation of more than 300 pages. He has been in the bank since 2001, except for an 18-month stint working on a truck project. His dissertation topic: GM, the UAW and the city of Flint. ...

He says the Jobs Bank "has been wonderful for me. It's doing what it is supposed to do, which is make it so I won't be a burden on society." But based on his studies, he has a low opinion of GM: "They took the Toyota concept of lifetime employment and applied it to the GM culture and what they did was create a bureaucracy. That's what GM does."

Crappy cars and guys gettin' paid $35/hr to put on lugnuts.
Those US automakers need a revamp from the top-down.
Start with the unions, and then get the designers out the door as fast as possible.
