I have no doubt that Palin is a good person. Most Christian people are. I think she's an excellent speaker, and I think her story is every bit as compelling as McCain's and Obama's. The issue I have with Palin is the same issue I have with the Republican party. Back when the ACLU was trying to wipe every sign of Christianity (and other religions) out from public view, many of us who aren't religious, or who were from non-christian religions supported the Christians in their struggle. The Republican party was an awesome place to be. We knew the liberals would bring their A-game, but we were united. We weren't going to let anyone fall by the wayside.

Roughly a decade later and it seems like people like Palin have taken over my party. Most everything we support can be explained by hard facts and cold figures, but these days people just point to a verse in the bible and nod sagely like it explains everything. It makes being a non-Christian Republican a bit unnerving, especially when you get someone who wants to teach creationism and the like in schools. I don't want my kids learning that. We have our own culture, and it's every bit as American. So then I say something to other Republicans, and they're like, "America was founded by christians on christian principles.", usually followed by, "You can leave anytime." Gee... thanks brother. I'll just stand over here on the wayside.

Palin is a sign of things to come, as the religious right takes over the Republican Party. Soon... maybe even come November, it's time to separate myself from the people I agree with, because they're agreeing for the wrong reasons. I can honestly say I'm not pro-Palin. I've got to be convinced McCain can make it 4 years come election day.

I think the problem is that the Republican party might as well change it's name to the Conservative party, because that's all it tries to be anymore. "The religious right" seem to go hand and hand whenever anyone talks about Republicans, and it's even becoming an acceptable substitute.

And it makes sense. Like you said, more and more positions within the party are being based on religious reasons (e.g. teaching creationism, a non-secular belief with Christian founding, in public schools), and that alienates anyone that doesn't believe in mixing politics in religion. We left England to get away from religious persecution, and now we're un-American if we don't fall in line with "the religious right". Oh well.

and the latest uncovered stories about Palin is she had an affair with her husbands business partner and the drug use of her daughter and son....wow this should really appeal to the wacky conservatives....as usual the more right you go the more immoral people become

Eh from the things I've been reading and hearing about Palin, I no longer want to support her or McCain. On the other hand I don't want to support Obama+Biden either. :?
