Debris From Truck Crushes Van, Kills Woman
Truck's Load Was Not Covered

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman was killed Wednesday when a trash trunk careened across a turnpike entrance ramp, dumping debris into Interstate 595 below.

The truck appeared to have struck the wall of the overpass before it rolled over onto its side on the ramp.

Falling debris crushed a minivan passing under the ramp. The van continued off onto the shoulder of the interstate for some distance after the driver was killed. Police said that the driver was 49-year-old Jennifer Green of Broward County.

Traffic was at a standstill eastbound on I-595 for hours. By 5 p.m., all the lanes were open, but the ramp was still closed, backing traffic up nearly to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport exit.

The trash in the truck was chunks of concrete and other debris left from hurricane damage. At least seven other vehicles were damaged by the debris.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that the truck driver admitted misjudged the curve, and when the weight of the load shifted, he lost control of the vehicle. They said he may be charged in the accident.

Local 10 questioned FHP about whether debris-related accidents have increased since the hurricane. Because Gov. Jen Bush declared a state of emergency, the requirement to cover loads in trucks was lifted for at least 90 days. But FHP said even if trucks are not covered, they still cannot be loaded in such a way that debris falls into the highway.

Investigators said because of the nature of Wednesday's accident, it is unclear whether a screen cover over the truck's load would have been able to hold it in.

But Lt. Bill Ferrell, with FHP, said that any law enforcement officer that sees a truck with an unsecured load can cite the driver.

"We are concerned," Ferrell said. "Hopefully there is no trend. We don't believe there is. We think it's just driver error."[/img]

And all that talk about covering the load, as if a sheet of canvas is going to stop a load of concrete chunks.

Yeah, I thought about that too. It wouldn't have made a difference. Very sad.
