so i have a question. i have the rebel xs and the 18-55 lens, that is all i have at the moment. what are some good ways to make my pictures better with that lens? i still dont quite understand the whole TV, AV, P, M and A-DEP settings. I have read the manual but still dont get it? I am going to take a digital photo class in the fall semester but I would like to know more so i have lots of practice before hand.

than you are at the very beginning. tv and av modes are about the basics you should learn first.
av allows you to control the exposure and aperture while the the camera does everything else automatically. tv allows you to control the shutter speed and exposure while the camera does everything else automatically.

without understanding the basics of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, an explaination would require pages of text.

did you just buy the camera recently?

try setting the camera to av, set it too 3.5 for shallow depth of field and f8 for deep DOF and go out and take pics. You l earn much quicker on what these settings do from experimenting.

keep the lens at 18mm if you want that distorted type image with perspective. the objects along the edges of the viewfinder will stretch. anything about 28mm with your camera will give you a natural looking perspective.

Also, pick this book up from the library or a bookstore.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson

One of the best photog books you'll read.

btw a while back someone asked what the visual differences were between a 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm lenses were if the 18 55 was set to 50mm.

I responded that there was a big difference in sharpness.

anyhow I made this a while back but never got around to posting it so here you guys go.

these are 100% crops, not perfectly focused on the exact spot but the differences should still be apparent.

cheers

and here's another test I did,

with UV filters
100% crops unaltered images also

this was a test between a really cheap sunpak filter, no filter and B+W 010 f pro UV multi coated filter.

sunpak = less than $10, BW was $40-$50 and no filter was free hah

the sharpest of course was no filter.
the sunpak was actually SHARPER than the BW and retained better image quality. However there are two versions of the sunpak filter one made in China and one made in Japan, I used the Japan one. I hear the Chinese one is not as good.

Didn't test flare resistance, BW may be better in that regard, but the sunpak is sharper thats for sure.

I used the 18-55mm for the test lens, because this was the softest lens I own, I wanted to test lowest common denominator for sharpness.

took these today saw a bee outside and ran in to get my camera, made manual adjustments and just snapped a few shots off before he flew away.. uncropped, these were framed the way they were shot straight from the camera. whilst mid flight handheld.
