the AF on the D40 isnt that bad, i still do it on all my shots with my XSi. Here's all the shots i took with the D40 + 50mm, all came out pretty good i think?

Yeah you'll still have to manually focus it, but when you're ready to upgrade bodies you'll already have the right lens. Not that there's anything wrong with the older AI/AI-S lenses, but finding one in good condition can be a little tricky.
To go back to what RoJa said, I am in the same, boat. I am content with my 30D for now. But I know, eventually I want to upgrade.
I'll be fine with my lenses because I only have the 70-200 haha and the 50 1.8, both EF.
