I got pulled over on Thursday morning. Yes, that was Thanksgiving Day.

I was not speeding, doing nothing but driving through town. Unmarked city cop cited me for tint. I got a compliance ticket. I removed my 20% film earlier today and went and got the ticket shredded after showing them my clear windows.

someone i know(wont say names) recently had gotten 20% and he knew that he was gonna be in some trouble in certain areas but he knows an eye doctor who is a close family friend... the doctor wrote him a note that he keeps in his car saying he has sensitive eyes so he needs the tints... you guys can try this tactic but u have to know people...good luck... i wanna do 35% on mine...

I am not one for a dark tint (5-10%) but a sun shading tint does look good with the flint mica. Like max said it is not worth it in IL to tint your going to get a ticket, thats just the facts.

I have 20% on my fronts and only pullled over once for supposedly runnin a red, but the dumb cop let it slip that the light was still yellow and gave me a warning on the tints because his slip of the tongue.

most cops don't look twice @ the box tho. but seeing that it only cost me 50bucks I'd peel them b4 gettin a ticket if the cop gave me the option.

I should probably note that the compliance ticket I received would have cost me $75 if I did not comply in their time frame, which was four days. The cop did say that he could make it longer since he realized I was traveling for the weekend.

I have tints all around and when i got them they stated its 20% but honestly look more like ten.

In the state of illinois its illegal to have any type of tint on the front windows. With getting pulled over your just playing a game of chance. There are a lot of variables, like the cop, the percent. Some cops will let you go if they can see you and some wont. Some cops will pull you over if they notice any tint. You could get a cop on a bad day. If you tint your taking a chance and have to live with the fact that you know you will get pulled over sooner or later and have to pay some penalties.

Before 1 month ago i never got pulled over and then within 1 month i was pulled over 3 times. I was given a warning the first time mainly bkuz i was polite and etc. The second time i was also given a warning ( I was lucky) the 3rd time i was pulled over i received a ticket but was for only $25.00.

You do have a better chance of not getting pulled over with a lighter tint but with my car i like the dark tint look throughout the car so i went with it.

my xb had 5% tint over the privacy glass and 35% on the front. i think the huge contrast in shading made a difference in never getting pulled over when i had it... and i do 99% of my driving in the burbs (niles, schaumburg, buffalo grove, wheeling, etc)

Do the citys set the cost of the tickets for these volations?

Let's say I own property in Indiana, can I then register the car there, get plates and drive around chicago with tints? Maybe I can change the registration of the vehicle to Indiana...

i used to live in NW corner of indiana and i asked a county-cop friend of mine and he told me that in indiana its the cop's discretion whether or not ur windows are too dark, and that there isnt any specific number... but im sure if youre driving around with 2.5% all the way around, thats just asking for trouble

I have 35% all around...I've gotten a ticket for it one, a small $20 deal. Hoffman cops are _______s anyway, as long as you drive safely they shouldn't hassle you too much. 20% does attract a lot of attention though...my 35 is only as dark as stock SUV's tint in the rear.

I have 35% up front on my corolla and Ive only been pulled over once in Rosemont. I live in the burbs so eh lol. Everytime Im in the city I dont seem to have any problems. If its a state trooper then you better roll the windows down. I roll my windows down as long as its not raining/snowing and if the cop can see my windows in plain site (ex: if Im the only car on the road)

its way to much trouble to roll the windows down all the time... i have 15% on my cherokee (10% on the back window) and i havent gotten pulled over for it yet (i have been pulled over with the tint on the windows, but i didnt get in trouble for it)

If you really wanted some tint to your car just look around on at some car dealerships whos car have tint and go lighter than thiers. I think its better to some a little tint than having just your 3/4 of your windows tinted.
here is some info about tint in Illinois:

Illinois Tint Law Enacted: 1998
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN ILLINOIS?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Illinois, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows: No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows: Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window : Any darkness can be used.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN ILLINOIS?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.
Front Side Windows : Must be non-reflective, state law is not specific about what this means.
Back Side Windows : Must be non-reflective, state law is not specific about what this means.

OTHER ILLINOIS RULES AND REGULATIONS
Restricted Colors: No colors of tint are explicitly banned.
Side Mirrors :Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements: Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker Requirements: No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
Medical Exemption State allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.
