Default I have a problem with my power steering... need help

i swapped the stock power steering tank for the weapon-r tank. in the process i lost some power steering fluid. so i went to advance auto and got some, then added some (i might of added too much cause the tank doesnt have a low/hi line). well now when i turn the wheel my power steering is squealing very loud. one of my friends that knows alot about cars told me its because i have air in the lines now, beause i changed out tanks. so what he told me to do was put the front of the car up on jack stands, and then the wheel to the right, to the left, repeat. he said this will get all the air out, and it may take awhile. i trust what he has to say, but i also wanted more input cause i want this to get fixed asap.

any ideas?

he isn't lying. had to do it with my buddy's rx-7 after he cracked his PSF tank and we had to replace it. Just gotta work the air out. make sure you crank the wheek hard to both sides. will speed the process up a lil bit. leanred that the hard way.

i put in valvaline (sp?), but the back said it was compatible with ford, gm, cryslter, and other imports. i couldnt find anything that said toyota.

so that might be the issue too.

about how long do you think it will take with movin the wheel a back and forth?... sigh...

i get all this trouble just for chaning a tank out.. sigh =\

when you change anything out, your hoses,p/s tank, etc. you gotta do it right
just switching and adding fluid wont solve the problem, you do have air in the system
depending on how much is in there, it may take a few minutes, it may take a little longer, i can't tell ya
but you should have walked into your toyota dealer and gotten some fluid instead of gettin that other poop. they dont sell Toyota labeled fluid (not to my knowledge) just generic stuff

it was late, and i got new parts on my door step, and wanted to install. i didnt think to go to a dealer first and buy some fluid =\ i just wanted the parts on

last night i drove up and down my residential road back and forth movin the wheel back and forth all the way, but i think im gonna go to a dealer tomorrow and get a power steeting flush.... if i cant fix it tonigth after work

dave any other ideas of what it could be?

BTW, the stock fluid is like a clear gold, and the crap i bought was clear (that was a sign to me right off the bat, but i ndded fluid, so i added it anyway... bad idea i guess) and now that the car was on ad runnin, the fluid is now a solid brownish color.... AHHHH. i shoulda installed the tank, then had my mom drive me to work like she did today, and go to a dealer after work to pick up some fluid... f-in a man... im so ____ed =\

you shoulda, but oh well
def. go have it flushed out though, get all that poop you put it, out

i only put toyota fluids in toyotas, so it doesn't mess up any parts, i.e. the p/s pump

yeah i know... BAHHHHHHHHH

but none the less, alot of the auto know how guys at my work are telling me its air too, but that it should just come right out. and it shouldnt make a squeal noise.... BAH!

oh... and the fitting on the tank are a little bigger then the stock tank, so i really had to work the hose on, but that shouldnt block up the line either =\ so i dunno man. i think im just gonna drive it to the dealer tomrrow to have it flushed and fixed... how much dose ur dealer charge for one? mine is charing about 120 i believe... sigh... money gone that should be n my pocket

The only company that made a P/S fluid that made a difference was honda. . . use the wrong stuff you were effed. . . Toyota's will use the generic P/S fluids, it's the beauty of it. While it's nicer to use the toyota stuff it's probably relabeled generic stuff at a high cost. You'll be fine, more then likely you have a whole crap load of air in the lines, just keep doing what you were doing, make sure the resevoir is filled to the line or top it might come back out but you mentioned there is no full line.

Words of the master mechanic I work with. . ."when it comes to air in the P/S lines they'll work themselves out. You really don't need to flush the system unless there is debris in the lines. The noise will eventually go away just keep your eye on the fluid, low fluid can cause the whining noise also. . . unless you drive a FORD Taurus. Those things whine all the time no matter what you do. . . It's not a Ford Taurus is it?. . .ha ha ha"

that sucks. Can I ask why you would buy an aftermarket power steering fluid box? Is there any claimed performance gain or is it simply asethetic?

its for show only. all it does is hold the power steering fluid. no performance whatso ever. if anyhting it will actually heat up the fluild more because its in a metal tank.

and yes dave.. shiny = cool lol

No worries, you work at the dealer right? I understand. That's why it's called generic. . .ha ha ha. I dunno, my whole family has been driving toyota's since the early eighties and the only time we've taken to the dealer is for recalls no problems on any of the fourteen toyota/lexus' in the family but then again maybe we're just lucky. . .hee hee. How's the noise on the P/S break_away?
