what exactly is a state ref???
I have saw a few threads recently about a state ref... After graduating college i guess i still can't put 2 and 2 together. I was recently pulled over in MD for my exhaust and my defense was that it is TRD.(which everyone on here knows that TRD is not that loud!) I heard that you can go to a state ref and get them to make it legal, is this true?
If so, where in MD can i go? I live in Bryans Road next to Waldorf

I think the TRD Exhaust comes with a letter stating compliance for all 50 states (exhaust and noise). I had a similar letter from TRD for my old Gen4 Camry. If the dealer or the box did not come with that letter, you can contact TRDUSA for a copy: 1-800-688-5912. Maybe they can eFax it as PDF to your attention.

go to a toyota dealership that is allowed to do MD inspections, explain it to them, and get it signed off. easy as that.

Yea you can't really get a ticket for it since its still considered "factory" I got pulled over in VA for my trd exhaust & he could'nt write me a ticket because its still "factory"

cops can and will give you tickets for it. cops don't know its a factory accessory.... even after you explain it to them, they usually don't care. but it will get passed at emissions / inspections. its just a hassle to have to go though that.

did the cop have a exhaust noise tester?? I got pulled for my DC sport exahust here iv VA and the Judge said that since they didnt have a tester to see how loud it was when the pulled me over that they couldnt ticket me. however i was informed that apparently in VA its illigal to mod exahust with anything other then OEM. but was let off with a warning on that one..Im sure glad they didnt look under the hood to find i have no CAT. hahaha .... but as far as i know depending on the state there is a diffrence in the limit of noise an exahust can produce depending on the type of vehicle. I think VA limit is something like 95 decibles

Yea, they have to have a decible reader. But my friends that work for FCPD say that "any" aftermarket exhaust is considered illegal from wht he was telling me even if its under 95 dec, which I was kinda confused about.

i guess that must have something to do with emissions control... but you would think that as long as it wasnt crazy loud and still passed emissions that it would be legal.. ah i love how everything here is considered illigal
