New York State, Drivers with Tint ??
Hey. everyone . i have been looking online, for the tint laws in NY state. This is some info that I have found the most.
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.
but I have also found other sites saying that no tint is allowed in any windows. Now my question to you guys and girls. IS what do you have? have you passed or failed inspections and have you got any tickets for your set up ?
My car is registered in Long island, But I live in NJ. So I'm not worried when I'm around here. I am more worried when I take my once a month trip to visit my mom and sister.

I pass my inspections with my tints i got mines tinted 35 percent all around
I did get two tickets two weeks ago while driving at night.. got pulled over and the copper took out the tint-o-meter (lol) and gave me two tickets for 80 bucks each one for the driver and the passenger side windows......
damn rookie Boobies trying to make that quota

I pass inspection, inspection never checks ur windows lol jus plug in the comp and thats it.
i have 5% all the way around and i have the 5% strip on top of the front windshield as well as the whole front windshield tintes 30%
ive gotten numerous tickets for my tints too many to even count lol, there all worth 120 but thats if u plead guilty and if u get a rookie cop u will get fined for EACH window never happened yet to me ::knocks on wood:: , every once and awhile ull get a cool cop and theyll tell u to plead not guilty and jus take the tints off and have proof of it (pictures, aslong as u have pics u can always use those pics again over and over) i always take that route BUT never take off my tints i find a friend with the same car or ask a random person in there car if i can take pics of there car with my plates and they let me, BUT if u plead not guilty they CANT dismiss the ticket they can only REDUCE the ticket to 60 dollars which still isnt bad but still.
when i get these tickets its NEVER highway driving its always street driving and i always get it at the same precinct on Northern Blvd by bayside/flushing area which sux but watever, when i get pulled over i play dumb tell them my car came like that and never been pulled over for it if they ask.
hope this helps

I've never been pulled over either. Police just go right by me. Pass inspection with no issues. If im correct, I believe the law you listed about with the % is the old law. NY's new law is that all tint is illegal. I'm now wondering. I can check with my friend. He has been a NYS trooper for 2 years. He should know...lol
Then all i know is that my car is illegal since most of my parts are blacked out....haha. o well I haven't been bothered by the police in the 2 years i have had the blacked out parts.
In NJ you cant get around the fact that you have tint on the front windows. I say NJ cause your location says NJ. I have always had tint on the front windows on my cars in NJ going back to the early 90s. Back then you had to have your car inspected every year, but i had my ways around it. Then when the state used the rolling smog sniffer you had to take it to your local DMV inspection station. If you rolled the windows down they would make me roll them up, and fail me for tint. Now with the new law that every new car gets 4 years you can go at least that long with tint. I did, and i have a bright orange box with limo tint all around. I did get pulled over once in NJ in Freehold, but the cop wrote me a ticket for a broken windshield rather then the thint, cause he liked the over all look of the car. LOL
I was recently pulled over by a Nassua cop working my local street the other month. I know he didnt get me for speeding, so whats left? Tint. He laughed when he took out the tint meter and dropped it on the front window ... .005% He said he never saw tint so dark, and let me go cause my car looked so good with the tint on it. The only thing, he made me promise that if i do get pulled over in the future, i would roll down all my windows so the officer could see inside the car.
In NY as long as your car can pass the sniff test your fine.

Yea I live in Jersey, but my car is registered in NY, So I'm not worried about the new jersey laws when it comes to my tC. They last car I had tinted with Jersey plates. I never got a ticket for the tints. maybe cause I would always roll all my windows down when the cop would pull me over. but that only happend 2 times. and they where for a non working tail light.

I had the tint installed some 4 years ago by a little shop down in South Jersey. I paid around $300 for all 9 windows ... which really isnt that good. The edges were not cut straight, but thankfully there are no bubbles.
Just ask any window tinter if they have limo tint. I believe i used limo on the fronts, and 20% on the rest to get them to match the fronts.

Macavely,
I live in Upstate, NY and have 15% all around, minus windshield. I've been pulled over for tint twice in 2 years, and only got a ticket one of the times. My ticket was around 75 I believe. You just have to understand that you are taking a risk, but to me that risk is well worth keeping my tint.

i had bad exp with cops and tints. i'm not an a-hole and i try to be nice but at the end of the day cop say no tint aloud so w/e if u get tints just get em doesn't matter what % they are. your still gonna get pulled over. trust me i know
When I lived there I got pulled over with my Acura and got two tint tickets for the windows (15%). I must have said something to tick him off because he walked around my car and gave me two tickets for CLEAR license plate covers, and a warning for not clearing all the snow and ice from my back window. I just sucked it up and payed it. Now that I live in IN I haven't had any problems with my tC's tint.
Does anyone know the law with license plate covers? Besides my tickets, I parked my Father's truck on a street in the city and came back to find a parking cop issued me a ticket for the plate covers as well.

the way it used to be is that 70% light transmission is what was legal, which means that 30% tint was the max allowed. the problem is that most newer cars tempered glass is already tinted as part of the process... its only 1 or 2%, but its enough to set you over the limit.
on the other hand... I have had 20% tint on all my cars since 2000... I have been questioned... harassed even... paid one fine...
I have lived and worked in queens, nassau county, suffolk county, and I now live in westchester. Most cops don't bother with tint tickets unless you act smart with them, or if they are tacking it onto other violations.
