I'm not a SCCA member..... but have friends who Autox regularly who are and I have done it a few times myself.
In general, anyone can show up and run. Your car will need to meet a basic tech inspection (tires and brakes sould be good - basically the car needs to be safe to drive in general. For example, if one of your front wheels is a bit loose from a bad wheel bearing, ball joint or tie rod end - they are not going to let you on the course).
Helmets are required, but there are loaners available for when you run. SCCA member are available to for ride alongs to help you get the feels of things and give you some tips (a good idea, a number of these guys are very good drivers).
All in all, for around $30, its a bunch of fun. When you register, they will figure out what class your needs to go in based on the car type and mods if any. Depending on how many cars show up, you can get anywhere for 3 to 7 runs in a day. The CNY SCCS guys are a nice bunch of folks too and there are always a number of interesting car that show up that get run!
If I can get myself up early enough, I hope to make it out to a few this year in my GTI or the xB.
