I don't know about hotels, but I'm guessing that something in the Back Bay would be good if you can get parking (unless you're flying and only using the T to get around).

For food, definitely stop by the North End for some authentic Italian, or one of the restaurants on Boylston or Newbury streets in the Back Bay. If you're short on cash, there are a number of good pubs around the Back Bay and financial district.

Government Center is a good starting point for sightseeing if you want to visit the Freedom Trail points of interest. If the weather is good, I'd go to the greenway on the south bank of the Charles, near the Esplanade, for an afternoon walk.
