Just apply for a transfer from one vehicle to another thru DMV.

You can have your "custom" plates follow you from vehicle to vehicle.

just alot of paperwork for the Govt.

Shouldn't be that hard (wait it's DMV) give them a call first (800) 777-0133 and make sure you bring everything they tell you and a checkbook all the ones I go to don't take cards and the fees seem to change with whoever is at the counter

5108. Whenever any person who has been issued environmental license plates applies to the department for transfer of the plates to another passenger vehicle, commercial motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer a transfer fee of thirty dollars ($30) shall be charged in addition to all other appropriate fees. <----SEE ALL OTHER APPROPRIATE FEES THAT WE FEEL LIKE CHARGING AT THE TIME! (No I'm not bitter )

That all applies to the transfer of custom plates from vehicle to vehicle under the same owner, not from one owner's vehicle to another owner's vehicle, which it sounds as though Herb wants to do.

Be sure to check with the licensing folks that what you want done is actually something they will do.

How do I reassign a plate to another vehicle, retain a plate for future use, or release interest in a plate?

Complete a Special Interest License Plate Application indicating that you want to reassign the plates to another vehicle, hold the plates for future use, or release interest in the plates. If retaining the plates for future use, most plate programs require an annual retention fee. The retention fees vary by type of plate and are listed on the second page of the application. Failure to pay this annual fee will result in cancellation of the plate and possible reassignment of the configuration.
