Default So umm California?

What's up with this emissions stuff? Is there anything we can do to our cars and get away with. I'm from texas and as long as you don't have tons of smoke coming from your car they don't really care. Is it really illegal to have a CAI or Header on your car? WTF?

most aftermarket exhaust are legal.

when I used to have my honda civic my aftermarket air intake and headers are legal, CARB Approved.

Its just no ones making CARB stamped parts for the tC, yet.

There is one... K&N short-ram intake system for 05-06 tCs. Not sure if it adds anything in real life, but it sounds nice when I'm at 4K-5K.

100% illegal man. As mentioned, except for the K&N SR intake for the '05-'06 tc, nothing's CARB-approved (yet). And the header? Forget it for the our cars. As for exhausts, it's a matter of how loud it is, not so much for emissions reasons. By the letter of the law, they have to be 93db or under; however, it is at the officer's discretion whether it is loud or not, and hence issue a ticket or not. And, adding a header w/ a within-limit exhaust will make it sound louder = illegal.
And forget about putting tints (in the fronts) too.

Welcome to Cali

Even changing the color temperature or brightness of your stock headlights is illegal. So think twice before you put on HIDs, SilverStars, or whatever.

gas mileage can and should improve with correctly setup intakes and exhausts as it makes the engine more efficient

Heh, also, know that in CA, there's a law in california concerning automotive muffler repair shops. They are forbidden from replacing a WORKING muffler with an "aftermarket" muffler that is "intended" to change the sound. They are supposed to only use OEM or equivalent replacement mufflers. How equivalent equivalent is is something I'm fuzzy on though.

Yeah, CAI, headers, mod chips, removing your air filters, straight pipe are all illegal. Check out;
