Default 2JZGTE or RB26DETT

So i'm thinking about getting started on a new project. Its going to be a Datsun 240z with either a 2JZGTE or a RB26DETT engine. I plan to spend about 10k on this car. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if which engine is lighter in weight than the other. I know that if i go with the 2JZGTE then I wouldn't need to buy a different RWD tranny because the tranny that comes with the 2JZGTE is already RWD but if I go with the RB26DETT than I would need to get a RB25 RWD tranny. Right now i'm just doing research so any feedback would help. I'm going to do all my research before I start my project. Thanks -Van

Fuel injected or carb?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datsun_240Z

^They reccomend swapping in a late model L28T, bolts right up! You can use the same motormounts, and tranny + factory turbo = saving green for paint & suspension!

rb25 should bolt in a lot better than the 2jz also. my buddy put an rb26 in a 240 before and it was a pain getting everything to work. course he went for the awd conversion. rb25 would be most cost efficient imho.

The rb25 seems to be the lightest. but I think I'm going to do a twin turbo instead of a single.

i thought the rb26 could only be mated with the AWD transmission, thus mandating the need for and awd conversion.

but honestly, if you want cheap power, just buy a corvette v8, they are so plentiful and cheap, and make huge power either naturally aspirated or boosted, though they are bigger and heavier i suppose, thus making it nose heavy.

what about a smaller engine, like the RB20det, cheaper, lighter, and with the turbo you could make big power still.

Most pol that do the rb26 swap needed the rb25 rwd tranny. but the sr20 does sound good too.

i said rb20, the rb20 is a six cylinder, the sr20 is 4cyl. but both are 2 liters and turbocharged, so they are both capable of good things.

RB26. Hands down.

Yes the RB26 is out of the GT-R and is AWD, how do you fix this, simple, just remove the drive line and plug it. It has been done several times in Japan and I have seen it personally on a R34 front clip that was imported by a shop in Tacoma.

That would be your best option to go twin turbo.

Regarding RB20's, I would stay away, they are old and it is almost impossible to get parts for them.

RB25's are a good single turbo motor, but the intake manifold goes over the engine, for a side mount intercooler that is fine, but if you want to run an aftermarket front mount (you do), this makings for a piping nightmare, so your option there would be a Greddy intake manifold, around $650 dollars, but worth every penny.

Don't get me wrong, the 2JZ's are good, but I think you will find more support for the RB26, in the PNW, as there aren't a LOT of Supra's around unlike Florida for example and I consider that the Supra capital of the world with Titan Motorsports right there.

You're in Oregon. Go talk to Wes at Unatural. He has lots of experience and can help you (I think) in getting an engine and the parts to make it work. Also for tuning he is one of the best for Nissans in the PNW. Doing the swap is easy and there are TONS of old school sites with help putting the RB2x into that chassis.

Good luck, I can't wait to see it, Z cars FTW!

I read this after my reply, and actually the SR20 might be a better option. They are FAR cheaper to find, and get parts for. Getting the higher numbers.. the RB will always be king, but you can get 325whp easily out of an SR for cheap.

Go to Rrev Motorsports in Jantzen Beach. They will put any motor in any car! They put an s2000 motor in a ae86 corolla, and they put the same motor in a Datsun 510. They also have a ridiculously fast Supra 8.15 in the 1320. They know what they are doing and will give you some useful info.

i dont know about the rb26, but the 2jz is an iron block and is very heavy!

getting it to work would be easier, like you mentioned it already comes RWD, and also, if a part on your RB ever went bad, your stuck till you can find a part, with the 2jz you can literally go to a toyota dealership and ask for anything you want!
