Default Got into an accident last night :-(

Last night at about 6:30, I was driving up NE Portland Blvd on the way to a friend's house and I wrecked the front end of the xB after running a red light. :-(

I wasn't trying to run through a yellow or anything like that, the light was actually red and I guess I just wasn't paying attention for a split second. Anyway, a silver minivan was coming through the intersection at the cross street and we ended up hitting. We were both only going about 25-30, and nobody was hurt but I still feel like an idiot.

I immediately called the police and then called my friend to come down and help me out. The car was stuck in drive and the key/wheel/shift lock wasn't letting us start it back up or get the key out, etc. The cops called tow trucks for both of us and now my car is in a tow yard. Monday morning I will have a body shop I've worked with before send a truck to get it and then figure out the damage is. The front end is completely crushed and the hood is bowed up now. The wheel is slightly turned but I'm not sure if that's due to damage, or just the position I ended up in after swerving. Hopefully it's not a total loss. Even if my insurance takes care of it all, I don't want to start over with another (used) xB that isn't mine and I don't want to get a new car and have payments again (my car is paid off). This sucks. Obligatory pic...

Ouch, sorry to hear Eric, time for a bodykit. I don't know if it is still available, but ohcanada had an oem hood with a jdm parking mirror attached, May be able to get that, cut down on the cost of buying a new hood, if you don't like or want the mirror, you could have it removed and the hole filled since they will have to repaint it to match yours, just and idea, good luck.

New xB's will be out soon, car paid for, insurance coughs up KBB value, nice down payment, "I'll take the one that was in Miami, please", lol.

Eric, that's awful, I'm very sorry to hear about the accident. But wow, extra points for getting a picture of the collision at least, lol.

I hope it's not a total loss, like you said, so you can get your xB back. And hopefully that idiot feeling will go away soon. I know it's inevitable at first but hey, we all screw up sometimes.

So, did you ever get that other job?

Thanks guys. If it's not a total loss, insurance will cover everything to get fixed (-$500 deductible) but then I'll just feel it later in my premiums.

I actually have the 2nd interview for that job tomorrow, so looks like I'll be taking public transportation. Then, after that I'll call Enterprise to come pick me up and give me the lovely rental car I'll likely be spending the next couple of weeks in...

Damn! Sorry to hear about that, Eric!

From the angle of the pic it is difficult to tell, but it looks like the engine compartment is fine, though there might be some damage to the driver's side drivetrain. Bodywork shouldn't be a problem.

I hate to see a hurt box (especially a PW one!). Hope yours gets well soon.

Keep us informed. <===

Yeah, nobody was injured but they sent a fire truck and ambulance anyway. I don't know what I would've done if I (or the other driver) got hurt, especially since I have no medical insurance right now. Thank God for umbrella policies, though... these are the times that make me glad I pay a little extra for that.

I'm not really partial to used cars but I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the damage is. Will try to update tomorrow or Tuesday depending on progress.

Just a quick update:

Insurance adjustor called me today and my car finally made it to the body shop. They are in the process of assessing damages. He mentioned that some shift linkage has been pinched, which is why the car is stuck in gear (it's an AT) and why the key won't come out either. As soon as they can resolve that, the shop will be able to move it in and start checking out the rest. He said there did not seem to be damage to the front/wheels axle and sounded more focused on the front end/quarter panels.

He also said, though, that the damage already seems to be about 50% of the "value" of the car (not sure what the source would be for the value they are using) and once it reaches 75%+, that's probably when it would be called a loss. :-(

The worst part about this if it is totalled, is that I'll probably only get ~$11,000. I just paid the car off a few months ago so I'm not too excited about having to go out and finance something again and I don't particularly want to shop for a used vehicle either.

Insurance spent almost 12,500 fixing my old 05 BSP xB plus paid 1,000 for a rental. I had to pay about 400 out of pocket for rentals because the car was gone for about seven weeks and I had to take it back 3 times. My box was not put back together the same and it bothered me so we got a new one. It is just not the same when you know it has been tainted I didn’t enjoy driving it anymore. I wish I could have paid the 2k difference to buy a new one, but they didn't total mine out. The adjuster first said it only had 4,500 worth of damage, then it went to 6,500 and up and up from there. I think they purposefully low ball it, even the shop was like this estimate from the adjuster is missing a lot of stuff. The insurance company had to authorize supplements several times.

How many miles on your box?

Also...ask sdsnybny (Steve) about his experience with his damaged car...I believe he's still working on his getting the proper paint job (but at least the paint company is doing an entire repaint on their dime).
