It sounds like the insurance company isn't gonna spend more than ~75% of the car's value on repairs/new parts so if it reaches that point, they just total it. I suspect the car is worth around $10,500 currently (low KBB trade-in value) and I think it has slightly under 30,000 miles on it.
My rental car allowance is $20 a day for up to 30 days.
Also, the body shop called earlier and said something similar to the effect that the insurance adjustor's estimate is missing some of the stuff that would actually be needed for repairs, so I guess that's not unusual. It looks like the damages are already reaching the $7-8000 mark.

Went and took a look at the car today...

It also looks like the towing company swiped my radar detector and also broke the shifter... probably trying to get it into park (which was hopeless because the linkage is pinched).

That was a harder hit than I thought - there is indeed a lot of damage, and it looks expensive.
If the insurance company accepts their adjuster's estimate and starts the work, the body shop generally get with the insurance company directly if they find more things that need work as they start getting into the actual work. That is actually one way vehicles close to being totaled are re-built, instead...

Just by looking at it im guessing a total. The core support looks toasted....even if they fix it I would off it in a heartbeat as cars never seem to drive the same after a major wreck like that...good luck with it, but most of again glad you are ok!!

wow ouch dude, that does not look that good, but as everyone says, at least you are ok. Don't just settle for a price if they total the car. Shop around and find out what replacement cost would be on a car like yours and make them step up. Never just settle that is never good. Talk with Mo and Corey Anne I know that they went trhough a lot with thier car when they had to get it fixed. Good luck I hope this finds you driving again soon.
Eric, you are having the worst time with electronic equipment my man, first, having camera stolen on trip to Miami, losing MP3 player and jacket in taxi, then your cell phone battery going dead, now this, hope everything works out well for you.

Yeah, there is definetely more damage than I was expecting. When I first saw the driver's side, I was like
I believe my insurance company has already decided it's totalled, they just haven't called me or talked with the body shop any further. The shop actually told me he still has about $1100 worth of stuff to add to his estimate, so the total is gonna be about $8500.
The good thing is that one of the guys that works there said if I buy it back, he will actually buy it from me, plus pay me what I would have lost for salvage costs, etc. I've known these guys forever and trust them so I might make that deal with him. The sad thing is that I don't think I will get another xB. I just can't stand the thought of getting another one that isn't *mine* and starting all over. This one was exactly how I wanted it (and I still wasn't done). I might stick close to the family and pick up a Yaris Liftback, though... probably going to go drive one (and some other cars) this weekend. Overall, I would still like to have MY car back but I think it's just too far gone.

I've thought about both the new Scions that are coming out. Honestly, I don't like the changes they made to the xB (especially the C-pillar window delete) so I would probably get an xD over that, but I can't really wait that long. As soon as insurance stops covering the rental car (when the claim is closed) I won't have a vehicle....
lots of used xB's on autotrader.com, found an RS1 in the Seattle area, looks stock, think they were asking 15,000 something for it, had 25k I think on it, was looking because a friend I know through work is looking for one. Good luck.

Might be a little far for me since I'm over on the West side of Portland. I still have no check in hand from insurance and not sure I want to start all over again with a new xB...
Thanks, though!

Update:
Insurance adjustor called this morning and said that they will be giving me $14,070 for my car
. So, I'll be going to the body shop tomorrow to get it squared away and he'll give me a bank draft on the spot that I can go deposit. I'll also be making a couple hundred extra by buying it back and then selling it to one of the body shop guys (plus selling some things like my sub & amp to him as well).
I have rental car coverage from the insurance company until Friday so looks like I will go out and drive some more cars.
