JENNA - GO LOOK AT COMET

We live right on the sound (we'd have a view but there are trees in the way) so we'll just take the car down the road and watch it from the comforts of the car.
Went out to Golden Gardens tonight to see the comet. Well worth the effort, IMHO.
Look in the general direction of the sun (after sunset!). The comet will be north of Venus, but not nearly so high in the sky - it will be only a few degrees above the horizon (a full moon is half a degree). The comet will be more or less directly above the sun, just a wee bit to the north.
The comet'll be the second brightest thing in the sky, after Venus. You'll see Venus before you see the comet. The comet's tail will be pointing nearly straight up, ever so slightly northward (away from the sun).
Or, if you get up early enough, try to catch it before sunrise, off to the east.
Either way, you need a good view of the horizon - the comet's very low, and it's easy for trees or buildings to block your view.
The Astonomy Picture of the Day had some links a few days ago.

Thanks for the low-down on the comet, Gsnorgathon. I'm so glad we have a second chance at seeing the comet. Maybe we'll haul my oldest's new telescope (don't know if it'll be any more neat... have NO telescope experience).
I'm calling my husband right now to remember to look. He's doing the route and a lot of it is on the beach roads with excellent/best views of the west.

I wish I were a morning person - didn't even come close to getting up early enough to see the comet. OTOH, not too terribly sad about not driving on frozen roads at the coldest hour of the day...
Well, we went to go see it and, well, there were clouds! We watched the sunset and waited for while afterwards, just in case but it was a no-go.
How long is it going to stick around? Can I see it tomorrow morning?

Major bummer about the clouds, eh? I'd thought about going out to see it again tonight, but alas... Given that it's Seattle, and it's winter, I'm fairly amazed we had even one decent chance to see it.
My understanding is that today was the last chance to get a really good look. The tail's pretty long, so you might get a look at the tail poking up above the horizon even if you can't see the nucleus. OTOH, if you've got binoculars or a small telescope (and know where to look), you might be able to catch it even though it'll be against fairly bright sky (since it's getting closer to the sun, at least as seen from Earth).
ScionEyes - I'm not sure if you'll be able to see it, but what I've read indicates it will become visible in the southern hemisphere. You are closer to the southern hemisphere than we are... :@)
