D40 all the way.

You'll get damn near the same results with an entry level Canon. It's all about user preference, and I found the Nikon to be 100x easier to use than the Canon.

I have the d40 too - Nate that's what I was using at Formula D
I got mine at Kits camera, but i purchased the package with 2 lenses and such. I'm not sure where you can just buy the body only (ebay maybe), otherwise just buy the camera w/ the one lens it comes with & i think it's around $400-$450

Im a Canon guy myself. It hasn't steered me wrong so far, has taken around 25,000 shots.
Not to mention Canon lenses > Nikkor lenses.
You can get a Digital Rebel XT in the price range you are looking at.

i would buy something like this locally so you can have a warranty - that way its peace of mind knowing that you won't have to worry about anything.
this is a great camera and you will have it for awhile so i wouldn't buy cheap honestly.

Have you been to a camera store yet?
That would be the first thing I would do, any place will allow you to hold the camera, play around with each body. The lenses that will work with it, and be able to provide a lot of advice on what would work best for you.
Canon and Nikon aren't the only camera brands out there. Sony (after buying out Minolta) makes a fantastic camera nowadays.
Don't go and buy something off of eBay because people online said so. No offense guys.
But cameras fit different people in different ways. And you may not like the interface on one. For the most part all entry level cameras will provide you with the same specs in regards to megapixels, the sensor (which is the most important part. NOT MEGAPIXELS). So buying one brand over the other will only differ in how the camera feels to you.

Look at the info, listen to people who have them, and come up with
your top three to look at, then go to a store that has them and get a
little hands on.
No matter how good the camera, unless it feels right and works for you
it is a waste.

Other than that, even though I'm a Fuji guy, the D40 is excellent.
