need sub advice
ok so how do i hook up a dual voice coil sub to my amp? I have always used single coil. Plus what rms rating should i look for in a sub if i have more power at 2 ohms but im supposed to use a 4ohm dual voice coil?
you can hook up dual voice coils in a couple different ways, parallel or in series and then it depends on how many subs you have as well & what the ohms are per voice coil.
the higher the rms rating the better the sub, but more people blow subs from underpowering them then overpowering them so make sure that the rms rating is near or above your amp's rms rating (from what i have been told)
basically if you take a a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub and bridge it, you basically get a 2 ohm load on your amp. That's the basic of it and after that when you add subs I have, sometimes, difficult time doing the math correctly to find out the ohm load of 2 subs or even worse 3 dual voice coil subs (like my set up). I believe my set up is down to 1 ohm or less the wire it has been wired up so that we can get the most wattage out of my amp.
hopefully this will help - i always try looking for dual 4 ohm or 2 ohm subs when i'm shopping. Again the higher the rms, the better the sub - just don't under power the subs or you'll blow them

brock here is a guide I use,it makes wireing much easier.
http://www.edesignaudio.com/wiring.php
Basically if your amp gives max usable power at 2 ohms then
1. you need a sub that has a power range in that power
2. then you need a dual voice coil sub thatwill operate at 2 ohms
3. then follow the wire diagram pictures for the wires,it is easier than you might think.
Does your amp need to be bridged to change how it puts out the ohms or does it internally do it like mine does.
for your set up you need a dual 4 sub.......that meens you take the + from the amp and put it to one + on the sub and then take a jumper wire from taht same terminal and run it to the other + coil.......then take the - from the amp and goto the - terminal and from that same terminal take a jumper wire to the other - terminal......now your sub is wired to run 2 ohms........see very easy.......the first picture shows how to run it,it is harder to do like 2 3 or 4 subs cause you really gotta think on how to place all the wires to work the subs together at the right ohms and at first the diagrams look confusing.......but they really are not.

thanks for the help everyone. I was thinking thats how you do it but thanks for confirming. but i think mine does the 2-4ohm internally cause i dont remember seeing anything to switch it and it only has 2 speaker hook-ups. I know how to run wires and i know what rms is and how to hook up single coil subs but this whole 2 coil thing is throwing me off. I need to get with the new wave audio stuff. LOL But again thanks yal. Ima figure this out soon i hope. Know i got my box in i just need to figure out how to get the enclosure to stay angled up to look good and fit in its home better. I know Brian you had a problem. What did you do? I plan on raising the floor up a lil with the custom false floor thing. But did you use shims cleverly hidden to keep it up as well?

this one looks nice and its well in my RMS range

We had to break out the sander and some 40 grit and sand the base flat and keep modding it till it fit right, the passenger one was much better fitting than the driver, which one did you get, also if you go too thin you can add more glass and resin inside very easy to get it all nice and thick and solid again.
I think once CJ brings the magnet covers for the subs to me I am gonna run them infinate baffle, with a twist.the spiders will get painted body color and leave the boxes black........I know once the painting on allthe parts in thea car is done it will look hot and Cindy will be a happy camper with her car......lol

If you're going with Diamond, the D3 series is better

you can go up to a 800w amp with that sub and not over power it and would have a clean signal all the way up,500w would power it up fine though.......and it iwll fit the box perfectly, that is about the same size sub as the IDs we got in the car.
one thing i forgot to ask before was what kind of bass do you like? having owned many brands and different kinds of subs. I've gotten know how each brand has a preference for punchy bass (Kicker), while some like deep low bass (image dynamics, elemental designs).

What do you guys think about the Type-R?
I already have everything Alpine, plus it has a wide frequency range more than the others i looked at so will hit many different ranges. Thst is what i want and i have always heard good things about the Type-R and I have always liked Alpine!
