Scion tC2 bolt-ons and mpg
Hey everybody,
So ever since I got my car in May 2012…I've been driving the same roads, same routes no change in style of driving except for the occasional days where I have a little fun and floor it.
With no bolt-ons: ~24-25 avg mpg.
With Tsudo: ~23-24 avg mpg.
With Tsudo + Injen CAI/SRI: ~22-23 avg mpg.
With Tsudo+Injen+Dezod Green Header: ~20 avg mpg.
With all 3 bolt-ons, I was expecting some increase in mpg, which is what a lot of others have been saying.
But to my surprise, with the addition of the green header, my mpg dropped down 4 mpg.
Not only did my avg mpg. meter drop, but my fuel meter is also dropping a lot faster…and this is going to hurt my wallet in the long run.
1/4 of a tank can normally 60-75 miles (24 mpg) which is about right.
But now I'm only getting 50-60 miles from 1/4 tank (20 mpg).
I've asked around and people have said:
- Bigger pipes = more air intake = ecu uses more fuel to compensate
- Disconnect battery and see how that goes
I'd like to get some more feedback and see if there is anyway I can fix this.
I'd like to keep all my parts but if there is no way my mpg can recover, I plan to uninstall the header and intake, and sell it off.

Idk broski I'm stock, summer highway I can get 32-37 mpg highway and combined 27-28
Winter.. With remote start, I swear I get 18-22 city/combined. But highway straight 30.
I honestly am avoiding aftermarket everything due to the stories I read similar to yours, nothing positive I've read, a fewhp is not worth codes and bad mpg. Each their own though
13, 6 speed manual

I feel it man.
I tried my best to go with the bolt-ons that throw no CEL and so far that has been good to me.
As far as bolt-on results…I've been getting mixed results.
There's definitely little torque/hp gains
But usually with aftermarket bolt-ons, I'd expect more airflow = less back pressure.
Its just weird that some people get mpg gains while others do not.

Did you consider the fact that you're much more likely to hammer the accelerator after you've installed aftermarket parts? Plus this is not the time of year for fantastic gas mileage, they put a bunch of fillers in the mixture in winter time. Your mileage has suffered a normal amount, given those two changes. Wait until spring rolls around, reset your trip computer, and drive for efficiency, up shift no later that 3500, ect. Even this time of year I'm averaging 24 mpg combined.

I installed about 3 weeks ago and the only time I mashed on the accelerator was right after the install to test.
I drive auto and I literally drive just to see the eco light on, so I'm aware of when I drive to hard or conservatively.
You are correct about the winter fuel fillers as well. I hear that they just changed up to winter fuel about the same time I finished my install so that is a factor.
