Default Living in California?

Hey all. Here's the deal. I'm from Upstate NY, and have never even visited the west coast. I was just hired by Toyota Corp. to work in Torrance, CA for a summer internship. I've heard all the horror stories such as, people in CA aren't friendly, traffic is bad, etc. What I'm interested in, what is it like to live in CA? Being from the East coast, am I in for a big surprise? Anything I should look out for? Basically, what can I expect out of this new experience? Thanks in advance!

The people here are just as friendly. Traffic is far worse than anything you've seen back home. If you frequent NYC, just imagine every on the road driving a taxi and you'll be fine. The big surprise is the slower pace (when not driving) and how spread out everything is; you're going to do a lot of driving.

Posted at the same time, I can retract my previous question. Overall I'm just really excited. I've never even flown in a plane before so everything will be a new experience for me.

The job is a market research position to test the profitability of placing dealerships in new areas. I'd eventually like to get into marketing for Scion. I'd love to hear some more replies. Thanks again to both of you for fast responses!

Nothing in L.A. is really crowded, it's just "well populated". It's not like the the large cities in the East where you're living on top of people in a small area. Torrance is home to large industrial corporations, including Toyota's main rival Honda, so there may not be much in the way of rental housing nearby.

Toyota is offering me housing on Cal States Dominiguez Hills campus, which according to google maps is only 4 miles from Toyota.

Cool! My only warning is you will be staying near the Home Depot Center, and it can become a mad house around the X-Games the first week of Aug, when David Beckham makes his home debut in July, and if the Mexican national soccer team comes to town.

No offense--but the most surley obnoxious people I have ever met are from New York. Maybe they are from New York City and not upstate--I will grant you that. It is pretty laid back here is what I am told. Traffic is bad, but there are lots of freeways to get around problems. I think you will enjoy your stay. There are Scion functions just about every weekend in the summer---good luck and hope to see you at one...........

The weather is why we live here.I would suggest housing fairly close to work so that you don't have a long commute.I also prefer the OC to LA.You are going to love it here! Good luck.

welcome to so_cal :]
CSDH is really close to toyota. i used to work down in torrance and know the place really well.
only bad thing about torrance is that because there are a lot of big corporartions theres a lot of traffic on the surface streets.
its not too bad though..youll get used to it.
hope you have fun :]
