Plus all that neon lighting on those cars made it look like the Disney electrical parade!...wait I still some of those cars today !
I haven't thought about it like this, but when you think about it certain trends in the modding are following along the lines of "rice", form over function sort of thing. The reason I bring this up is because I just got my August 2010 issue of Super Street, and in Charles Trieu's section he brings up an interesting point. The title is "Is 'Rice' Back?"
"So the other day I was talking to an old friend who's also a known car builder. He deems many of today's enthusiasts as 'JDM ricers'. He's referring to the guys with staggered wheels on non-rwd cars, crazy offsets, chromed engine parts, beauty washers, shaved engine bays, wild paint colors, canards and too many non-functional parts. It's the same type of attitude that went wild in the 90's and ended up with clear taillights, ridiculous body kits, pastel paint jobs and huge wheels. This time around it's just disguised as 'JDM', but it's just an updated form of rice. So 'JDM rice' is his term for it all. I thought that was pretty funny and somewhat on point. Personally, I just don't want to see another set of BBS RS or another roofrack."
Now I'm not bashing on any of these styles because honestly I like the look of some low offset wheels. Would I put them on my car? No. But I think they look pretty cool. But in 5-10 years from now, what is going to become of all the current coolest trends? Will they be rice? And also, has the term "JDM" become overused?
I thought this was an interesting point of view and left me thinking. Just thought I'd share.

Dude most of the cars were like that at the first HIN in Long Beach..I still think that was the best HIN they ever put together,,it was so raw..

shows back then were better i think too. Dance crew showoff, and dj scrath battles. Another thing was there wasnt as much competition amoung people.

Don't see any shows now doing that..there are more stock cars than all out show cars in the ones being thrown now..so sad.
Have a Rice day !
dont remind me about that. I remember one of the Showoffs in Del Mar I was denied because I didnt submit photos. I will still never show at a EAF (Extreme Autofest)again.
i remember that; a lot of shows you had requirements like 3 major mods including suspension/drop, aftermarket wheels (not painted/powdercoated stocks) and some sort of body work. i think DUB is the only one that still asks for photos (well at least they did last year) because i know some of those shows were jammed packed and they only wanted the best/craziest

Even if someone gets denied at a show, that only means they have to step up their game and to try harder the next time. It makes you a better builder and not to get a big head like others today that think their stock cars are the ish just because they got into a big show...too funny.

Great to have support, but if you don't have any mods worthy enough to show, best place to park is outside in the parking lot. JMO
and one more thing..people pay to get into shows to see exotic and nice cars...if they wanted to see stock cars, they can go to a Ralphs parking lot and look at them, better yet it's free.
oh wait..one other thing, no one on here ever mention ur crew, so if tagged urselves as RICE, that's on U. Every one is just conversing and sharing laughs on here.

the topic is called "what's rice to you". None of the comments by anyone was not directed at anyone either. This is a subject of conversation and not pointing fingers. All comments are neutral too. Jeff, no one is taking stabs at your bro. I hope you got my text message to try and clear stuff up.
I do agree with a lot of the shows going on minus Scion VIP lacks the "wow" factor. Scion VIP is special because it gives everyone not just a chance to win a piece of plastic, but to be able to experience and motivate them to build a complete showcar. BUT I will be damn'd if I spend 15 bucks to park and $25 to get in an event and see the talent of a parking lot meet. Which leads to my conclusion why i dont show my car anymore and just participate in a fund raiser like what Revoluscion did a few months back. No intentions to compete, support, or anything like that. Just a good gesture to give something back when I can afford it.

All these comments are everyone's own opinion, which we are all entitled to.
and if someone wants to say something to me say it, would rather know what a person feels about me or my opinions than be fake when they see me in person.
and again the question is "What's RICE to you ?"
