Default HELP!!! Water + xB = Fux0r3d

So my wife hit a 2 & half foot deep puddle in the middle of the road & Hydrolock'ed my car, My car has/had 64k+ miles, so no warranty, and with 2 young kids, I have NO money, with that being said, I am officially fux0r3d.

1.) Should I call the Ins. co & see if they'll total it?
if so, what if I'm upside-down against their payoff?

2.) Should I try to find another motor & replace it with help from some hardcore locals?
if so, Where could I get a motor & how much?
Other then time consuming, is it complex/complicated?
Should I swap the whole motor or just the broken parts?

I took the day off tomorrow to try to sort some things out, I will probably end up parting out most of my parts to get this fixed. But they'll come in due time.

Please help, I need advise more than anything right now.

Sparky/Dave

guess your wife is going to be taking the bus...

some insurance policies cover hydrolocking, so check that out.

or you can buy a used engine on ebay or from a junkyard and have it installed.

those are the best choices.

Go for #2. Either way with the insurance you'll be screwed cuz it'll go up. Not to mention they probably didn't know about the intake so... Just try and come up with about 1K and buy a used motor. Those 1NZ-FE motors are in the xb, xa, yaris, and echo.

Here's one with 6K on it for $850+shipping so about a $1K.

Thanks, guys.

I'm leaning towards replacing, btu I really doubt that I can get $1000 to get that, and could probably find a local 'yard with one.

I'm going to make some calls today.

that sucks Dave! I'm guessing finding a replacement motor will be the best bet. I'll check the companies we deal with and see if I can find you one cheap and quickly.

BTW, short ram all the way.

Well, after much bickering and arguing, we had the car towed to the Dealer (Phillips) and the Service Manager suggested to call the Ins Co. So I did, and they are going to send out an adjuster to see if they will cover it.

I'll let you all know, when I know more.

Hey Dave, tried to get back with you Saturday...we got Chris's car a new motor twice from Michaels Salvage on OBT Downtown. First time he payed $320, next time he payed a little more.

Tommy's xB just did the same thing (hydrolock) a couple weeks ago and I called Michaels and they had 7 1.5s starting at $520 with 40k miles. More for lowr milage ones. They have a warranty, too.

On both Chris and Tommy's car it took about an easy day to swap motors and get everything buttoned back up. If the insurance doesnt work out then give me a call and I'm sure we can get something together for you. Chris was in the same spot as you and we got him back together. Give me a call.

Hey Shawn, I got your call but right now I'm looking to see if the Ins Co. will cover it (or total it), if not, I'll get with you & Chris.

They STILL haven't sent the adjuster, but at least we have a rental & get reimbursed for most of that.

I would be best if the insurance company will cover it...backyard engine swaps are not covered by warranty, and you never know what a junkyard engaine has been through. Just ask Chris

Yeah, that's what I figure, if they don't, I'll probably get one from LKQ (Michaels' or Crystal River) and swap, then rebuild & sell it back.

These motors arent worth rebuilding. I'm sure you could find a dreamer that wants to port and polish the head, but other than that it's just good scrap.

That's great news...cold air intakes should be outlawed. I have a brand new Short Ram here when you get your car back I'll gift to you if you just throw the old CA away. You wouldnt want someone else going through your same troubles.

I dont know how many times people have to go through this before people get the message that these things kill your car. I personally know of 5 xBs that have suffered the same fate with cold air intakes.

Thanks, but I actually won't be installing another one, OEM will be fine for me.

I'll probably "Gift" mine too.

Probably Used, but it will have less miles then the rest of the car, FL Law FTW.
