I know the iQ was released elsewhere with a 5-speed as an option. Yet our version has been released without one and with discouragement as far as ever expecting one. I feel Americans have a bad rap for being bad clutch jockeys. There is talk of a new 6-speed in development but still not for us here in freeway land.
After having driven one I believe a manual would make the iQ quicker and more fun to drive around. It seems to have such a heavy German feel on the road you feel tempted to grab a gear and go for an apex on a freeway ramp. With out that gearshift lever the iQ doesn't have much of a chance to snag male buyers off the floor.
Hopefully Scion will make the correct decision and let us have it.

The CVT's laggy and slippery alright. But after 15 years drivin' my Suzuki 5-speed, I don't miss the clutch chore. If you stand on the CVT's throttle its control logic will fake up a decent 3-speed automatic (it will actually disengage momentarily to upshift 3 times on the way to 70).
I'm working on a way to identify the system, crack the ROM and tweak its gain scheduling a bit...In theory it could actually be reprogramed for different driving conditions, shift the power curve around a bit...

It really wasn't that bad. keep it in "S" if you want sporty pep and "D" for cruising. and "B" for going down a hill or extra stopping power.
Yes I still prefer a manual, not so much to do it but because I know Automatics cost A LOT to fix when they break, and CVT's EVEN MORE so.

I passed on the 2012 iQ and will continue to drive my 2005 xB (108,000 miles) for now. Scion has always marketed themselves as the "fun to drive" car brand, yet they came out with the slug-like-performance iQ. I'll buy an iQ when Scion can squeeze 5 or 10 more hp out of engine and it's connected to a 6-speed manual transmission.
