Default FJ Cruiser has the makings of a hit

Have you all seen this NY Times review?
I'm tempted to buy one.

And — this is important — I'm not a drooling FJ40 worshipper. I'm sure that it was a fine old 4x4, but my enthusiasm for the FJ Cruiser has nothing to do with latent fondness for its predecessor. That bodes well for the FJ, because if the retro trend has shown us anything, it's that the well of nostalgic customers isn't deep, and when it goes dry the car in question has to stand on its own merits for a new generation. That's why the Ford Mustang is a success while the Ford Thunderbird was not.

Most retro-inspired cars are based on a groundbreaking original — the Mini, Mustang or Volkswagen New Beetle. While the FJ40 Land Cruiser became an icon for Toyota, in style and name it always wanted to be a Land Rover. In the FJ Cruiser, Toyota puts a futuristic spin on its derivative past, and in the process ends up with something completely new.

I'm debating on one of these as well. Before I bought my tC, I almost purchased an older FJ Cruiser to fix up. I went down to the dealership to enquire about putting my name on a waiting list. They said that I was already the 12th person and they weren't going to have enough FJs to fill that list when they first arrive. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the nice article BTW.

My car was in for service and one of the west coast demo FJ`s showed up. There are 11 in the country right now. It got a crowd. It`s nice, but, I`m not totally impressed with it.

i can't wait till we get ours in a few days. I really like it. the only thing i don't like about it is the suicide doors, and lack of roll down windows for the rear passengers. it makes the people in the back feel really boxed in...or at least that's what it did to me. i like how it has the floor you can just shoot down...like the element. i love the fact that it's a real off road vehicle.
i also heard somewhere here, that they are planning on making them as much as they do xB's...which will be a really good thing. I can't wait.

I saw three at the Chicago Auto Show. I love it, and really want one, but can't afford another car payment now.

I've heard that it will be priced somewhere in the mid 20k range. I'm really curious to see one on the dealership floor because this is the first japanese import that I know of that has gone retro. I saw how the interior had colored panels similar to the exterior and I'm so anxious to see it in person. I strangley like the yellow on that truck and I'll bet it will give the hummer a run for it's money.

I admire cars with innovative/original design, but I don't really care for it too much. I think it looks like a cross between a Jeep, a Hummer, and an Element.

I think I've seen the vintage model of the FJ concept parked near my dorms. I'll see if I can find it and snap a photo. If I was looking at the right vehicle, then it's pretty pimp. Old school.

I already know it's going to by my next car when I'm done with the xB in a few years.

"It is also one of the few affordable mainstream vehicles out there that has a personality. Just looking at it makes me want to stop shaving and learn to kayak."

Well said.

Dang...Can't stand those headlights...
Either way, I don't think I'm part of the target audience (So, I'll stick to my landcruiser/4runners)...

I think the round headlights are a tribute to the old school. I'm curious what the aftermarket suspenion selection will be like. Most big name lift companies semi-ignore the import market.
