Default Scion Competition: Honda Fit

Just got confirmation that the Honda Fit will be rolled out nationwide by 09/2006. I spoke to their VP of Marketing for their Western Region and he happened to be staying here at my hotel where I work. He also mentioned that the Life is also on it's way for 2007.

Fit

The Fit is Honda's answer to the Nissan Versa and the Toyota Yaris, which are also brand-new this year: it's small and cheap, with a base price pegged at between $13,000 and $14,000. The five-door going on sale in the U.S. in April is, unfortunately, not as cute as the three-door model sold elsewhere in the world. At least it's well equipped, with six air bags, ABS, air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors, and a CD stereo all standard.

A 109-hp, 105-lb-ft, 1.5-liter SOHC VTEC four-cylinder is mated to a five-speed stick or a five-speed automatic. The Fit weighs only about 2500 pounds, though, so performance should be decent. The Fit Sport is distinguished by a body kit, including a rear roofline spoiler, fifteen-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a six-speaker, more powerful CD stereo with equalizer and iPod connectivity. The base model makes do with fourteen-inch steel wheels.

I'm sure the reliability will probably be better, but it looks like a chevy Aveo from the side.

The Life seems to be a smaller xB - which will certainly take the xB's market if they (Toyota) does go the 'bigger is better' route (which is terrible, by the way).

The only thing I worry with smaller cars is having these big bulky SUVs driving next to them - the smaller car will always lose in an accident. But, their fuel efficiency is second to none.

I love the Euro styled smaller cars. They're much more fun to drive. I would certainly consider buying a Life (if the specs are halfway decent).

I already have plans to test drive a Fit and a Yaris... With the value of the xB holding up so well, it'll only cost me a couple grand to hop out of an '04 and into an '07.

As long as my rims fit, I'll be straight.

I was hoping the Fit would be here sooner...oh well. Since the new gen fit is coming out in Japan in 07, I wonder how long they'll keep selling the current Fit (5 year old design) here in the US?

Also, I am very surprised to hear about the Life coming to the US. That is a real Kei car...meaning super duper small, as in Smart car proportions. You can't even buy tires small enough for the Life here in the US!....

18s on a Fit or Yaris is like running 19s on an xB. FYI, those VIP Fit pics are only running 16s.....

Gee - What a unique design. Long sloping windshield behind a low sloping hood and side windows that taper as you approach the rear. Gee where have I seen a simliar design recently. HOW ABOUT ALL OVER THE JAPANESE (and on some American made) CAR MODELS.

I'll stick to my xB with all the space, good mileage, easy entry and exit, comfortable high seating position, a windshield that you don't have to wedge your head between the dash and the glass to clean.

For the rest of you, enjoy the boredom of repetition and don't forget to buy something in the grey to silver range. ;-)
