Default Auto off headlight problem

Every once in awhile, my headlights stay on even after I take out the key and then open the driver door. Does anyone know what this could be caused by? It's really annoying that I have to check my headlights before I leave the car. I like to keep my lights on all the time and I tend to forget to turn the lights on when I get in the car so turning them off manually is not a good option. Usually I have to open and close the door 2-3 times untill they turn off. The dealership wants over $90 to diagnose the problem and that's BS for a small problem.

Anyone?
I've unplugged my battery a couple of times and at first it seems to work, but the problem comes back.

the problem probably has to be with the sensor that detects the door opening, since that is what triggers the headlights to turn off. check to make sure it is connected and grounded etc.

when you open your door does the interior light come on like its suppose to?
only thing I can think of is that the car isnt registering that the door is opening, maybe a loose wire to the door switch?

I thought it might be a door sensor. Where exactly would this sensor be? Would it be easy to address the problem myself?
