Hey guys, I was planning on blacking out my tail lights and my third brake light. Can anyone from TX tell me if this would cause problems with the cops? I've seen it done on other cars here but I wasn't sure if it was street legal. Any help would be very appreciated.

 

uhh... it depends on your local laws... so i wouldn't know the specifics, but in general, blacking/smoking out the taillights will prevent red from reflecting in the rear (which is a bad thing) and cops may not like that.

 

I live in Arlington and I saw a biker cop pull over someone for smoked tails. And I'm sure it wasn't for speeding because we were dead in traffic. ... Plus what happens if someone rear ends you? Would you really want to put liability into question? ... I say don't do it.

 

Thanks guys. Does anyone else have any information. If you smoked out the taillights and put brighter bulbs in would that make a difference??

 

i talked to the local cops about just this
if you have led tails then your ok to tint
any other bulbs are a no go
so i guess if your worried about legality get the tycs and tint those
i did

I've seen cars with really dark taillights, and they're painted not vinyl overlays.

If you are concerned about legality the easiest place to find information is to search for vehicle inspection criteria. TX law, like most states is suitably vague and leaves a lot of discretion in the hands of the inspector. For most states one of the most important line items is distance visibility. Going with the standard Smoke is probably your best bet as on most applications (standard bright red tails) the Smoke film will turn the tails a deep rich burgundy wine color in bright mid-day sun and look dark - but still functional at night. As with most things some degree of common sense prevails. If your taillights look BLACK the light output will be weak and somebody will ask you about them ;)

TX does have a specific line item banning paint though....

As almost everybody in the aftermarket biz states - all items are designed for off road use.

wTc, if you were following a car with our smoked taillight kit in traffic at night you would be hard pressed to tell which vehicle was tinted and which was stock, no matter LED's or not.
