HIDs worth it?

Pink or purple for headlights is ___....IMHO...
The cheapo 80 buck ones have me asking a lot of questions.
First are they real HIDS (meaning you got bulbs AND ballasts)? If you just got bulbs, you dont have hids.
Second, did they come with projectors and/or housings? If not, you are glaring other drivers and they should be illegal.
One thing I hate is people putting cheap, non focused and improperly housed hids in thier cars thinking they are so blingin cool, while blinding other drivers.

Let's get it clear. There is a distinctive difference between HID kits and HID retros. Kits are imitation incorporating HID technology in headlights that were not design for HID. You might get better brighter outputs, but not much due to improper light pattern. You also risk accidents by over exposing light beams to opposing traffics. Like many have said, they're aftermarket and rare will they last anymore than 2 years. Retro is using OEM HID parts. The light exposure is exactly as OEM settings. And off course, they're OEM quality and will last you for the long term
Although HID can be 4X as bright as halogen, I don't think HID was designed just for better vision. It defines the class of vehicles. It gives you luxurious look. That's why only high-end cars have them. If you want better vision, get brighter halogen bulbs, like silver star or similar. If you want luxurious, use OEM hid parts. HID kits have poor quality and you'll end up spending more money in the long run.

they are designed for better vision. i rode in my bros' cls 550 last night, and his genuine hid's put my hid kits to shame. his low beams looked like a flood light shining down the road.
I don't know about the technical side of hid's but I have been very happy with my Flowlighting 6k from Oznium. I noticed a much better field of vision and have had no complaints from other drivers, and I'm on the road at night all the time.
Here's the 6k compared to silverstars to give you an idea.

And none of them impress me much at all
I can see more than well with standard headlights and cant fathom spending the dough for hids. Yes, they have nice output. Most of the time (even oem) only the VERY good ones are decent about not blinding people. And if you retrofit oem hids into our housings with our reflectors.. you still arent getting the right pattern.
For people with decent vision, HIDs are utter overkill IMO as far as lighting goes. If you just like them that is cool, and if you like that "bling look" (although I never look at a car and go "cool headlights"
) then that is cool as well. But if you do it, you better spend some cash and do it right.

honestly, my HIR halogen bulbs output a better beam compared to my HID kit which i sold after about a month cuz there was just way too much glare.
i'm currently doing a retro right now with oem parts.
if you want usable lighting and don't want to blind others, check out HIR toshiba bulbs. they are about 50 bucks shipped and only require small trimming to get the base to match a 9006 base.

There is no doubt that OEM hid shine over HID kits. Like I said, Kits are imitation that aftermarket uses the Lingo of "bright and quality" to sell. But when it comes down to it, it’s just improper distribution of lights and it deviates from the purpose of HID invention.
I just ordered my 6k since the site only had 4300 and 6000, no 5k =(
I wanted pure white but 3bspec.com didnt have the 5k. I would go with retro-solutions.com but there was a deal going on for HIDs at 3b. =) Just ordered it an hour agooo!

To answer the question at hand YES they are worth it. After putting them in I could see alot farther and more with the HID over the halogen. There was no glare and there was def no 'bling' look to it. IMHO I wouldnt associate HIDs with a high end car. I would just think they want you to be able to see better. I mean its $140 how can you go wrong? and if you dont like them send them back.
^^Have you ever sat in your friends car and watch yours drive by? odds are there is glare whether you think so or not. I have HID too and I will be the first to admit they do cause a good bit of glare, that is why I am trying to find cheaper (although not as perfect as reto-projectors) methods of reducing the majority of it.
Also if your slapping those babies on and not adjusting your headlights down then you really are causing a dangerous driving environment to other drivers.
After buying one I really don't see how there is much better visability (considering your being respectful to other drivers) I see it now as more of cosmetic. Now if I had the money and time to "do it right" that might be another story.

Yes I have driven by my car because I wanted to see how it is to other drivers. It was just as I thought they are bright but nothing that will cause a distraction. ( to me at least) Like I have said and this is just me the HIDs are brighter and i can see more and i put one bulb in and left the halogen in to see the difference. It would be alot easier if someone made projectors for the xA at a reasonable price.
Yes you HIDs are brighter but most people, trying to be nice to the other drivers, will aim their headlights slightly down to reduce glare therefor losing some visability.
but yeah I guess if you didn't aim them down then you would see more, it's just not being thoughful to the other drivers.

I have only had a maybe 4 people flick their lights...within a 2 month time frame....

and to the above, only 4 people, lol. you should have NO people flashing you. the reason why people flash you are because of the glare you are causing.
