Yeah its what holds the hood up. When you put the air diversion panel in then put the hood lift down the tip of the hood lift rests on the panel. The panel is very thin sheet metal and dents easily.
I have a gas shock like most cars now adays so I removed the original hood support.

I reccomend the shock and its cheap. Smartass on here sells them
