Need help fixing paint/clear coat
I will post pictures tonight, but something like tar or something industrial grade, glopped on my hood and my hatch. I didn't notice it at first but when I did it was hard as hell to take off.
I used some polishing compound to take most of it off, but now when I run my hand over the spot where it was at (about the size of a quarter), I can feel a slight depression and the paint is slightly stained now in color.
From my rubbing, I caused pretty good swirl marks on the hood on the area surrounding the glop. Those I figure I can buff out, but what about the rest of the glop affected areas?
I have no idea what the substance was, but when it came off, it was this horrid brownish black color. I'm pretty certain it came from me driving on Lower Wacker here in Chicago (its an underground version of a major street in the city, like driving through a parking garage at 50mph)
I really want to pay hundreds (possibly thousands) getting it repainted.
I used Turtle Wax Polishing compound to get the majority of it off.
What should I do?

I have not yet tried to clay bar it, I have a mothers claybar kit so I could try that. I just am worried because I can feel an indentation in the surface as I run my finger over the part that wasn't goo'ed to the part that was.
I can try the claybar once I get done with work.

Wet sanding with very fine grit shouldn't mess with the paint. It might make it feel a little more even (you mentioned the indentation). Then buffing it out should polish the finish back to a shine

to wet sand get a bowl with Dawn dish soap and water and some 2000grit,sand lightly with the water mix in one direction, rinse and then sand a little more, just sand like 15 seconds at a time.
then 3m or another rubbing compound, then polish or glazing compounds and then rewax.
It might of been hot tar, this time of year they retar the cracks in the asphalt and it gets everywhere and sometimes in big splats. It can burn the clear coat pretty good.

I really appreciate the advice on how to wet sand. I'll do it on the hatch area first since its more or less under my spoiler and you can't see it without being shown it....in case I screw up.
Then I'll attempt the hood if the hatch goes well.
I won't time time to attempt this for at least another week since I work so much this week and have a wedding next.
I'll make sure I post the results of it here.
