Default Painting over a vynil mask

Ok..well I tried searching for this and didn't come across anything that would relatively answer my question.

Ok, I have a part that I want to mask of a design with vynil, spray primer and then spray paint over it. Once that sits, remove the vynil and then clear coat.

My question is, can the above process work or will my part end up a disaster? I've had a part done up before like this but it was with a bodyshop. I'd like to try this with the Duplicolor primers, paints, and clear.

Thanks a lot in advance. Oh, and does anyone know the spray paint that matches the Super White 040 paint? I think Duplicolor has it, but I'm not sure.

It can be done and look great!
Only issue is finding the perfect time to take the vinyl off so it doesn't create jagged and ruffed outlines. Also trying to take it off without putting fingerprints in the paint too.

you can also take a razor and score the edges of the back mask lightly to break the seal and prevent the mask from ripping the paint off.

^x2 trace the outline where the paint meets the vinyl stencil with a razor before peeling, also wesand before you clear coat to insure a seamless transition

That shouldn't be a problem. The paint should dry prior to peeling off the vynil if you (ever so softly) trace the outline of the vynil mask.

I have 1k grit auto sandpaper that I've used to wetsand the part to get it like glass.

I wonder, do I need to put a primer on it prior to paint? I mean, it's been sanded so well almost anything should stick to it. Also, can I go to like NAPA or Autozone and get a spray paint that will match and look good to the 040 paint code?

theres a place online, its been talked about here where you can order OEM paint in rattle can form

Id use duplicolors addhesion promoter instead of primer if its a plastic part like a hatch garnish, I only use primer on bare metal.

You should be able to. Adhesion promoters are basically like a clear primer I believe. Spray in light coats, sanding in between paint and clear as stated.

I'm happy to hear the FM paint from that place matches perfect. I'm still waiting for my FM paint to come in.. Stupid FedEx
