Default Rear window installation question

About 2 months ago someone tried breaking into my car through the stationary roof window right behind the sunroof. I called the local Toyota/Scion dealership, and they're telling me that in order for them to replace the window, they have to replace the WHOLE sunroof/rear window housing/assembly. They want $800 for the parts, and $900 in labor. Now this seems to be really freaking high just to replace that small window, and I kinda feel like I'm getting hosed. Has anyone attempted to replace this themselves, or have any resources/tips they could give me? I'm out of San Diego, CA, and if anyone knows a cheaper place for the labor, that would be great.

ANY help would be appreciated.

$1700 for a small roof window, good God...

And your insurance won't cover it?

I know right... OK, obviously if I had full coverage at the time, I wouldn't have posted this. And yes, I know, my fault for not being fully covered at the time, I don't need 50+ posts giving me the "tsk tsk" just to get a cheapshot off, that's not what the post is about. Can anyone confirm that the whole housing needs to be replaced?... That's what I'm really looking for.

Thanks in advance.

Wow. Take it easy tiger. No need to get riled up.

You wouldn't believe how many people do not know what their insurance covers. So the above responses
are legit. I would call local glass companies and see what they quote you. It couldn't hurt that's for sure. GL.

I know, I understand. They were legitimate questions, I'm just so used to the smartasses on the forum that I get a bit defensive. LOL. I called a couple places, and they all said they didn't have the knowledge nor the tools to do the job and referred me back to a dealership. :sigh: Thanks for the advice though!

Call some of the local glass shops that do windshield replacements. I'd bet there are some that can do it, they'll only replace the panel that's broken, and it'll cost a LOT less than that bogus dealer BS...btw, what dealer is it?

Kearney Mesa Toyota... they said that there's no way around having to replace the whole housing... I'm going to call a couple glass shops and see what they have to say. Thanks.

Also try a wrecking yard and see if you can pull it out of a wrecked tc.

Well I know they charge $100 an hour for labor (they installed my TRD springs for $200 and said it takes 2 hours), but I find it VERY hard to believe it'd take them 9 hours to replace that rear moonroof panel. I'm not sure, but if you want to try and locate the info, the service manual should have the procedure and a time estimate for it. If so, and if the manual estimate is much less than 9 hours, then you can question KMT why their time estimate is so much longer than the book. Beyond that, you can contact Scion corporate if the dealer isn't following appropriate service practices.

YES!!! Nodsetse! That's the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks for your insight on this, I'm going to track that information down and see if it's accurate. Much appreciated. Thanks again!

Used replacement glass: $250

Installation: $30

Telling the Scion Dealership to cancel my $990 sunroof/rear window housing order: PRICELESS

I would still report the stealership to Scion/Toyota corporate. I reported Don McGill in Katy and Houston so many times for messed up stuff that Toyota sent me a bunch of free crap AND bought my last ball joint AND had it installed for free. Heh last I checked the CSI for Don McGill was around 30%.
