Default VIS cf hood clearcoat? help?

Ok so I bought an oem style VIS cf hood. Ive heard several people recommend getting a clear coat put on. So I took it over to one the more reputable body shops in town and the guy looked at me like I was crazy. The VIS hood already has a UV protectant coating, but the guy said he would have to sand down past that to get the clear coat to stick. Any advice on this? How do I get a clear coat put on? I don't want to ruin the UV coating but at the same time I certainly dont want to end up with a warped/ heat cracked cf hood like you see on all these p.o.s. chevy cavaliers running around town. Please help!

If the clear isn't oxidizing yet, I'd just leave it alone for now.

Well i have a VIS also, and it is definitely oxidized now, but i'd just wait it out. Once it starts, go for it. If you take care of it well though you should be ok.

go to a different shop thats experienced with this. i've had 2 different hoods (plus a set of taillights) clearcoated. the body shop did a light sanding just to rough up the surface so the clear would stick. i only paid $100 each time for the clear coating, which consisted of 5-6 coats.

thank you for answering my question!! So just a light sanding and thats all there is to it? awesome....so how well has your hood stood up to the elements after you had the clear coat put on? Does it hold up as well as a stock hood might? Also, did your hood have a UV coating on it (like the VIS hood) when you went to get it sanded? Thanks!

Wow that is a great price. What was the name of the shop that did that for you?

i had my old GTI and 240sx hoods clear coated, which I got rid of years ago. I had them for about 2-3 years and they never fogged afterwards. its not the clear coat that fades, rather the clear resin on the hood itself. the clear coat prevents the resin from fading.
