Yes you can see a very tiny pebble mark on mine as well. However, windshields are suppose to be able to tolerate some rock damage as part of normal daily driving. Its designed that way. The fact that all of our cars are pretty new and have a crack in the same spot is suspicious. Perhaps its a weak spot near the passenger side middle edge? Ok I know Im stretching a little now. Its the engineer side of me that likes to problem solve he..he.

Im replacing it when OEM this one time. If this crap happens again, im going with the aftermarket from then on.

Ok....That whole weak point theory is good...I was just going to post on that...

Is it normal when you crack your windshield...then say...get on the interstate going 45 around the on ramp(270 degree turn) that the crack then extends itself 8" across the glass? I did that...heard a pop from over there and sure enough, the crack doubled in length. I know the glass is weakened...but still...should that happen?

Yeah the crack does grow. Mine was originally 4 inches, now it is 9 inches. It can either grow with change in temperature or stress from driving.

Im just ____ed because windshields are designed to take some abuse. Mine didnt hold up well at all considering it is only 4 months old.

i think i'm just going to go with the PPG glass. the quality should be just as good as OEM if not better. toyota does not actually make the glass whether it is in japan or in the US. in japan, a company named asahi makes it. in the US, PPG makes it for toyotas. i want to avoid filing an insurance claim and it'll also be less money out of my pocket.
you guys are right that a windshield should be able to take some abuse. i don't feel like i should have to dump $500 into my car three weeks after buying it!

my windshield actually did the same thing when i turned the climate control on in the cold, split my windshield all the way across. i went into scion/toyota and complained. the parts department manager refused to help me, so i contacted the regional manager, and told him the problem, and the lack of help i was getting from the service department at the dealer. he immediately let the dealership know they would be replacing my windshield. 1 week later, BAM! new windshield. no problems since.

So its my understanding that if you get a chip from road debris, even the size of a pinhead, and it causes a crack which spreads 8 inches..... you're FUBARed.

I noticed a chip in the windshield this morning.... this is what it looks like 5 hours later:

Went by the dealer and the guy says: "Yeah man, that rock must have hit a sweet spot or something." Hah hah, no ____.

They swore up and down that warranty won't cover this and because of the length of the crack I'll have to have a new one put in... to the tune of 997 dollars for the windshield and 195 installation.....

MY ___!!

I just put my first payment in the mail yesterday too damnit.

EDIT: I just got off the phone with James from Scion. He confirmed that if a "foreign object" struck my car and caused damage it is not covered by the 36 month warranty. If it were a manufacturer defect, then yes, they would have to fix it. But since it was a chip that spread, I'm just assed out. GRRRRR

Right, in order to be covered for any windshield damage you woulda had to pay extra to be covered... They offered it to me + some type of rim repair if i scraped them and i think roadside assistance was the package... I cant remember exactly, this was last July but yeah that's like running over your cell phone and wanting your cell phone company to replace it cuz you ran it over. Not happenin.

Scion didnt cause the rock to hit your car.. you are Fubar'D after all and also why isnt your insurance covering that for you?

Call your insurance. I know mine, as well as many of the major insurance companies include glass coverage with your comp insurance. There is no deductable on the glass.

my windshield got a 1cm hole in it. I was driving and a pebble went right into the windsheild. I didnt notice for a while but whenever it rains my wipers would leave a line and i would wonder why does my wipers suck. I was washing the car and i then found out why wont this black dot rrub off. So i use my nails and dug it out. Thats when i found out it was a rock and it went thur the windshiled.

One thing about windshield replacement is to make sure the shop that does it knows what they are doing, and when you get the car back take it out on the highway and get it up to speed to make sure there are no funny noises that same day. We had a 99 corolla that needed the windshield replaced from a stress crack, and when they replaced the windshield we got it back and thought nothing of it. The car was used almost entirely for driving in town only, but about a month later we took it on the highway and noticed this odd, loud, high-pitched harmonica noise. Couldn't figure it out for the longest time but we eventually realized it was from the bad windshield install. How annoying.

I called up my insurance and they didn't have a specific glass coverage, it was just thrown in with comprehensive coverage. Using Safelite, they quoted me about 300 bucks for an install and they'd come out to my house today. Unfortunately they only repair windshields for free, replacements are weighed into my deductable, which is 500 dollars, so I'm footing this bill today.

It is also going to be an aftermarket windshield. If the OEM windsheild split and cracked from a tiny rock chip, then I'm going to try an aftermarket one. IMO, windshields are designed to resist hazards such as rocks and debris.... not crack and break every time something taps it hard enough.
