just because the car is it gear doesn't mean the engine won't turn.

maybe have someone hold the brakes so the wheels/transmission/engine won't turn?

Brake lines are connected to the hub not motor.

but if the wheels wont turn because the brakes are on, the rest of the driveline can't turn either.

use an impact wrench. air tools make it easier.

edit: if you dont it'll keep turning...the crank will keep spining and you'll get nowhere

and just incase

I tried it nontheless, doesn't work. It seems to me that if I can move the motor while it's in gear and turned off then if I didn't have a parking brake the car wouldn't stay parked. Someone smart help me

I read all the threads, it even says in that thread "put the car in gear to keep the pulley from spinning"

Pushing on the brakes isn't too bad an idea when the car is in gear, keeps the wheels from spinning which will keep the tranny from spinning and thus the motor.

Really the best way to remove the bolt is to use air tools, put it in gear and remove the bolt. It'll still spin, but not faster than the impact does.

You also might want to have a pulley puller on hand just in case. And of course the most important a long breaker bar and a long pipe for the belt tensioner which is a royal pain. I used a 2 ft long combination wrench and I was still trashed for the entire day. In fact I was yelling at my buddy replacing/removing the belt to hurry and I'm a rather strong guy.

i had the same problem you're having. what i did was, i took a screwdriver i think, and wedged it in there. this kind of stopped the pulley from moving. then using a long breaker bar, my friend kicked it, and after a couple tries it came loose. i realize it's not the best solution, but it did work in the end.

Ok I give up, I'm going the impact way tomorrow. Thanks for the thoughts though.

Have a helper stand on the brake pedal. Is your car an automatic? I don't know for sure but I don't think that this trick will work on an automatic transmission car. You might have to try the wedging of a screwdriver or prybar in there, just make sure you are prying on metal. Also, once you figure out a way to stop the pulley from turning, if you don't have an impact wrench you can pop your ratchet with a hammer and it might break the bolt free. Happy wrenching.

I had the same problem and wound up buying impact tools.

It's a manual, I tried everything. I've learned to not attempt this without an impact. I should have listened to the other install threads.

put a thick screw driver into the rotor against the caliper that should cause it not to spin

i bought a big strap wrench. put it around the pulley and it was easy with hand tools.

2 people.

Put the car in 1st, and get off the clutch.
Have one person press as hard as possible on the brake pedal.
This will lock the drivetrain at the brake caliper.

The second person removes the pulley while doing this. I did it with hand tools and a "cheater" bar.

Our open-differential allows the spinning that you see, but if both wheels are locked, then the drivetrain should not be able to turn. I doubt a person could put enough power on the crank to overcome disk brakes.

I tryed to get mine off with hand tools at first and it was just spinning also.. The only way I could get it was with an air compressor.

I think there's a way you can jam a screw driver behind it somehow, but that wasn't working for me either.

600lb/ft impact will remove any crank pulley bolt in about 1 second.
