2005 tC in Calif-How Many catalytic converters do I need? Just one up front only ?
Hello
I am trying to get a 50 state 2005 tC to smog in California.
Car has Injen SS mufflers with one Cat up front.
Do the Calif tC's need to use two catalytic converters : up front and in the muffler?
If just one is enough and I need a new one will a universal one work?
Such as : ww.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/catalytic_converter/scion/tc.html
If not, where may I buy a used one?
Thank you for any tips and suggestions.

Must have 2, if its modified in any way its not legal in CA =/ (as far as amount of Cats and where they are located)
Find out the specs of the Cat from Toyota whichever one you need and then go to a muffler shop get a exact duplicate have it put in the same spot your good.

The listed exhaust on the car is a Cat back, meaning it should bolt up right at, or just after the secondary Cat. If you have only one, then the car likely has an aftermarket S-Pipe installed. There is no Cat in the muffler, learn your car.
If you need 2 Cats, get a second one welded before the 2nd O2 sensor and call it done.
All this information would have been found in a Search of your local laws, and SL with proper English skills.

Information still holds true. 2 Cats are needed, you can weld one up. And a lot of people confuse the long slender resonator for a Cat, it is not. And "my car" isn't a Scion, and the last time I looked under one to give a crap was 1 year ago.

Any one other than Spicy_McHaggiz:
If its the first Cat that needs replacing what are the options?
Images indicate that its welded to the manifold headers. And 49 State ones run around $360.00
All I can find are 49 state ones.
Does any one make one that's aftermarket for 50 States?

Do you have the original exhaust manifold or an aftermarket header? You only mentioned "one up front". Sounds like up front is manifold... If so make friends with someone that has an original mid pipe that could let you borrow it to pass smog.
Maybe take pics of what you have? Idk.

THanks MixD
But Dezod says its 49 state only.
I cant find anyone that offers an aftermarket one thats 50 State.
Made from 304 SS runners in a proven 4-1 merge collector design, the Dezod Motorsports is an excellent edition to your 2AZFE engine. The Dezod 4-1 header offers a 49 state legal ultra high flow cat, which no other header on the market offers, and solid American made craftsmanship.

I'm not sure how you'd check if the cat is good while off the car, I'd get the lowest mileage you could find for your best odds.
Yes, they do go bad. Running too rich can leave deposits on the honeycomb and burn giving the ECU misreads resulting in a CEL, which equals failed smog.
