Completely inefficient.

I love when this arguement pops up. It's stupid.
u think a celica gts is any better? it has a slightly worse powerband and still had a 6th gear. it only makes torque between 6200 and 7600

Note that I said proportional. I am not familiar with a Celica 6-speed, but I am willing to bet that it is a close-ratio transmission, with fairly similar highway rpms to the tC. And if they aren't similar, I am then willing to bet that if you want to accelerate at all at highway speeds, you have to downshift from 6th. Am I correct on either?

What size are your wheels and tires? I'm at 3000 rpm @ 65 and 3700 @ 80 on 225/45/17. Stock tires were about 100 rpm more. :?

^you read my mind

For everyone who wants lower RPM on the highway, just get some bigger wheels/tires.

My dad has an RX-8, and at highway speeds, he has almost the same RPMs as I. And that car has a rotary engine. Other than looks, i think a 6-speed on the tC is pointless

Just get an LSD, that is all a tC "really" needs IMO

Small number of sales, precision construction (small tolerances for parts), many things.

I also feel this car needs a 6th gear.

The LSD too but its way too much money.

well, yes a 6th gear would be awesome, but out only hope for an affordable 6 speed tranny is that the 2009 or 2010 tC's come 6 speed optional, other than that, its hopeless

No 6th gear needed. We "need" a shorter 4th gear and a longer 5th gear, a touch more torque with a longer final drive.

I just wish our 5th was a little bit longer. My eclipse was cruising at 3k at 75 mph. but i think im just used to it.

someone should call dezod(they make turbo kits and other parts for the tc/xa/xb) i saw on their website they make a Cobalt SS 6 speed conversion, pretty pricey but im sure worth it they list the difference between gear ratios(stock 5-speed vs. 6-speed), maybe they could be encouraged to do the tc conversion or xb/xa

Personally I think a 6-speed option would be very nice for thoes of us who are debating on wether to put a lot of money into their car. If your going for bolt ons, and little money for some fun cool stuff then yeah a 6-speed would be pointless. But, imagine the possiblilities if you turbo'ed the tc? with na tc unless u got big bucks to mod it you dont even have enough hp to push it much farther as far as speed goes, but with turbo im sure we could hit... what, like 155 with a 6th gear? I just think it wouldve been a cool option to add just like the rsx-s. But thats just my opinion...

The only gear that I think would need the ratio changed is first. It's too short for F/I cars. All the other gears could be adjusted accordingly. I believe our top speed should not exceed 135. Going 155mph is stupid, in all scenarios.

Not if you are on a rack track with a fully built motor and the proper safety equipment, and even then 135+ mph is possible without a 6th gear.

I can't envision anything surviving a roll or impact at 150mph. That is what I am basing my opinion off of, safety. 150 would be fun for sure, but that's the same thing I thought before I rolled my tC at 100. I am a walking miracle.

That would be why I said "on a race track with proper safety equipment" (i.e. roll cages, driving suit, helmet, etc.). Yes, 150+ mph is cool... on a track, but anything over safe freeway speeds on the street is suicide; it sounds like you learned a valuable lesson.
