Default Airbox

Ive searched and searched but couldnt find my answer anywhere. What I want to know is what is inside the stock airbox above the air filter that appears to be screwed in? It looks like some sort of filter but why? First there is the white air filter on the bottom and inside the top part of the airbox is the smaller one. The white one is the air filter right? Sorry I know I sound silly but the air filter looks way different than what Im used to and I have no clue what the other on is for. Thing is I want a K&N drop in and I was also thinking about removing whatever that other thing was since it probably isnt needed. Thanks!

The white plastic mesh is a thin layer of charcoal between the two plastic meshes, designed to help the tC pass strick emissions tests be removing certain polutants from the air coming into the engine.

I removed mine.
And then got a Ingen intake the next week, either way, it's up to you. Not going to hurt you much, not going to help you much.
