Airbox/Air Intake Shaking violently when idle...
I have done a search for this but have not come up with an answers to my questions. I bought a Scion xA, last week, 2006 only 300 miles on it so far. When I am idle, in park my air intake (air box) --(I hope I am giving it the right name it is right of the engine with the big hose thingee and what seems to be a filter box) shakes violently..sometimes to the point where you can hear the rattling in the cabin. My questions are:
1. Is this normal?
2. Is it true that thr air intake/airbox on scions is made differently than alot of cars and is made to "bounce" and is not bolted down?
3. Can this violent vibration of the airbox do any damage to the airbox/air intaje system or any other part of my vehicle over time?
4. I took it in to the dealership and they pretty much blew me off, told me it seemed normal(of course it wasn't shaking as bad as it normally does when they looked at it)--should I take it for a second opinion? Car is driving fine otherwise.
5. I hear that these cars need to "break in" does this seem like something that might stop once it is broken in?
Thanks for any replies!!

Questions answered.
1. Is this normal? yes, sorta
2. Is it true that thr air intake/airbox on scions is made differently than alot of cars and is made to "bounce" and is not bolted down? it is bolted down
3. Can this violent vibration of the airbox do any damage to the airbox/air intaje system or any other part of my vehicle over time? maybe over 150,000 miles, but not it seems it may be nothing to worry about
4. Car is driving fine otherwise. your car is ok, take to a different dealer if you really think this an issue
5. I hear that these cars need to "break in" does this seem like something that might stop once it is broken in? cars of the new millenium do not need a "break in" period. engines are designed today to be reliable and fit correctly with each other. You can take it easy the first few hundred miles, but I also heard your supposed to drive it like you stole it that time period too. But your airbox doesnt have to do with "breaking in" the engine
your most likely rough idling. it goes under 750 rpms for a few seconds and comes back up.
happens to most xA's, and most cars actually.
If you want to end it, take the car to a toyota dealer and see if they can adjust idle a little higher.

Thanks for the reply...any idea if I asked them to adjust the idle if they would consider this warranty work since I just bought it or charge me since it is a special request...I feel better now knowing that it is normal..but can rough idling have bad effects on your vehicle? what is normal RPM if I am in park and/or I am at a stoplight? Thanks again for replying!
if you got to a toyota shop, they should do it for free, it takes like 5 seconds.
it wont wear down or hurt your engine in anyway.
it is supposed to be 750 rpm and like 1000 rpm under full load (i.e. a/c stereo headlights)
Make sure the airbos has all of its contacts snaped closed. there are 2 metal little contacts on the front that you can pull up and snap closed, they are black.
Also see if you can notice any removed or loose bolts.
I suggest seeing the dealer again to ease your worry

from what i remember my stock air box shook like your talking about then. I would turn your motor off and shake the air box and see if its loose. It will rock back and forth a bit cuz it has rubber dampaners down on the bottom half of the box where it bolts to the tranny. I really wouldnt worry about it they seem to all do it.
aem is the one scion sold so i wouldnt think so. I have k&n and i dont worry about going into a dealer with it... 1. its carb legal (really has nothing to do with it but you know) 2. its a well known brand. 3. they have to prove that the intake caused the piece or pieces to break. If a valve cover gasket goes then obviously wasnt the intake that did it and so on and so forth....
hey scion04xb,
you have a 06 xa with K&T typhoon? i thought they weren't carb legal with 06.. only 03-05. because my xa does shake when it's idle and just like someone said here intake could make the idle noise more silent. i have a 06 xa almost and i'm trying to find an intake that is "carb legal".

yep mines carb legal it came with the sticker and everything to put under the hood. Just look into it man... 03-05 will fit your car too just one thing is diff. I dont know they call it but its hooked to the stock intake upper lid its towards the back on the left side... well instead of sliding off like the old ones it has a screw so you have to turn it on its side and have to screw hold it...
